If you feel like things are finally beginning to change for the 2026 Boston Red Sox, you aren't alone. Their four-game sweep of the New York Yankees finally has some fans believing that the team might have the stuff to go on the run it needs to be competitive in the American League East.
Multiple factors have led to Boston's emergence. The quality of its opponents is certainly not one of them, as it lost a series to the lowly Colorado Rockies in the days before sweeping its ultimate rival. But some players' offensive breakouts, coupled with impeccable starting pitching, could carry the Sox quite a ways.
As of June 30, the Red Sox have strung five wins together, their longest such streak of the season. They won those games at home, which has been exceedingly difficult through the entire first half of the season. Boston sits 4.5 games out of a Wild Card spot with the Houston Astros, Minnesota Twins, Toronto Blue Jays, Athletics and Baltimore Orioles ahead of it.
But something separates the Red Sox from those teams. Each has a negative run differential — and they are quite negative. The A's lead the pack with -59 while the Twins are only 29 runs under. Boston, meanwhile, has a run differential of eight.

This is mostly due to the excellent pitching the Sox have been getting out of their rotation lately. Red Sox starters are on a tear with 12 consecutive quality starts, the third-longest streak in franchise history. Sonny Gray, Ranger Suarez, Payton Tolle, Jake Bennett and Connelly Early have been unstoppable, even without the injured Garrett Crochet in the mix. Sox pitchers have a 3.37 ERA combined over the last month.
The offense has finally started coming together to complement the pitchers' excellent work. Caleb Durbin has been Boston's hottest hitter for weeks, with a .324/.349/.608 slash line and six home runs in his last 30 games. Anthony Seigler has been impressive at the plate since his call-up (.361/.425/.556 in 12 games), Ceddanne Rafaela has stayed consistent all year and Willson Contreras has awoken from his slump.
The Red Sox still have a long way to go before they can be taken seriously as a contender, but their top-tier pitching and livelier offense give them a decent chance among their other competition. It's well established that the American League is having a weak year and the teams ahead of the Red Sox in the Wild Card race are hardly inspiring (subscription required). If Boston can maintain its current pace of play — and maybe get even better when Roman Anthony and Crochet return from injury — it could make a lucky second half push toward the postseason.
