On June 28, after most Boston Red Sox fans had lost hope for their team, they pulled off an invigorating feat, one they haven't achieved since their 2018 World Series-winning season — they swept the New York Yankees in four games.

Not only did they overcome two, two-run deficits to do so, which they had done just once this season before June 25, they won four straight at Fenway Park, where they've struggled all year. The Sox are now 16-25 at home and they knocked the Yankees out of first place in the American League East (with some help from the Tampa Bay Rays' weekend sweep).

Boston entered the series with the worst record in the AL and New York the best. The Sox flipped the script on Cam Schlittler and maintained its onslaught on Gerrit Cole. Sonny Gray pitched the longest no-hit bid of his career. Payton Tolle might also fancy himself a Yankee killer. And just when New York thought it might steal a win on Sunday evening to stave off an embarrassing sweep, a severely struggling Jarren Duran came through for his team with a perfectly placed single.

Red Sox come together on June 28 for season-best win to sweep Yankees in four games at Fenway

The Red Sox's four-game sweep is their last series against their rivals until late August, when the playoff race will be well underway. There's no way to know now whether Boston will be in it at that point, — most probably believe it won't — but if it can finally find some momentum after its most exciting win of the season, the run it's needed for months could come at last.

Red Sox Venezuelan players collect donations for their home country after devastating earthquake

Venezuela on June 24 was rocked by two massive earthquakes, which clocked in at 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, sending waves of devastation around the country. Aftershocks have continued into the morning of June 29. The Venezuelan government has reported at least 1,450 deaths due to the disaster and thousands more people remain missing under rubble, according to Associated Press.

The tragedy has hit the Red Sox community particularly hard, as there are five players (Wilyer Abreu, Willson Contreras, Andruw Monasterio, Carlos Narváez and Ranger Suarez) of Venezuelan origin on the team. Before Boston's June 28 sweep of the Yankees, some of those Sox players gathered with fans to collect donations to help their homeland.

Abreu, Contreras and Narváez, with the support of The Red Sox Foundation, took to the streets to raise awareness for Venezuela. The Red Sox have been hosting donation drives for earthquake relief since June 27, and will continue until July 1. They have partnered with MLB, as well as American Red Cross, which has been supporting the Venezuelan Red Cross as the search for survivors continues into crucial hours.

Baseball fans around the world saw the extent of Venezuelans' pride in their country during the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Civilians there need help now more than ever. Red Sox fans, or anyone else interested in donating, can help Venezuela recover by attending donation drives before games or donating to the Red Sox Foundation here.

Red Sox starting rotation notches historic quality start feat with Yankees in town

The starting rotation has been the highlight of an underwhelming Red Sox team this year — yes, even with Garrett Crochet on the injured list since April 26. Gray has asserted himself as a top trade deadline candidate, Suarez has been arguably Boston's top offseason addition, and young stars Connelly Early, Payton Tolle and Jake Bennett have dominated early in their careers.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, the Sox's starters have come together for a historic feat. Boston on June 28 got its 11th-straight quality start, breaking a record from 1988 and tying the organization's second-longest streak from 1933.

The Red Sox's pitching dominance has gone unnoticed nationally this season, as the offense is too poor to stay in games long enough to win. But the four-game sweep of the recent best team in the AL shot the Sox's rotation into the spotlight where it belongs.
