One of the biggest issues with trading for a new catcher midseason is the fact that he has to learn and develop chemistry with a whole new group of pitchers on the fly. It's similar to why you rarely see NFL quarterbacks traded at that league's deadline. It's just so hard to put those pieces together on the fly. Say what you want about Carlos Narváez, but he knew the Boston Red Sox pitching staff inside and out.
Catcher is such a hard position to quantify because of this nuance. Not only do they have the most unique defensive responsibilities on the field in addition to the standard offensive asks, but they're also part therapist to their pitchers. The best backstops have a telepathic-like connection with their hurlers, and that kind of bond doesn't form over night.
That's what made the Adley Rutschman deal such a risk. After a hot first month of the season, his bat had cooled, and his wrist injury threatened his production down the stretch. Then, an elbow injury threatened his defensive potential.
The big news to come out of the weekend, though, had little to do with that and everything to do with the fact that Rutschman and rising star Payton Tolle share a fantasy football team. It might seem silly, but it speaks to that all-important pitcher-catcher bond, which is something that will become extra important during the playoff battles to come.
"That's a bond," Rutschman said. "It's a deep bond."
We don't disagree. It's not easy to trust another man with your fantasy football lineup, but in short order, Tolle and Rutschman have already reached that level of trust.

Tolle isn't exactly hard to bond with, but the fact that he and Rutschman have become such fast friends speaks highly of the new backstop as well. It's not hard to imagine that he's also developing strong connections with the rest of Boston's pitchers, and that's a good sign for what will happen under the bright October lights.
The Rutschman-Tolle bromance isn't just a fun story, either. It's paid real dividends on the field as Tolle has made two starts with his new best friend behind the plate, throwing 12 innings and allowing just one earned run and one walk while striking out a whopping 19 batters.

Tolle, of course, has been a budding star in addition to quickly stealing the hearts of Red Sox Nation. Since he was called up on April 23, he's been the eighth most valuable pitcher in baseball. The kid is special.
Meanwhile, Rutschman's complete game is rounding into form. After getting off to a horrid start with the bat after coming off the IL, he's starting to round into form. Since his dominant revenge game on September 3 against the Baltimore Orioles, Rutschman has hit .269/.321/.692 with three homers. It's only been seven games, but if this is the start of a hot streak, it's coming at the perfect time.
The overall message here is twofold. First, the Red Sox acquired an incredibly gifted catcher in Rutschman when it comes to handling a pitching staff. Second, Tolle is about to become Boston's next great sports icon.
