Payton Tolle has quickly carved out a special place in Boston Red Sox fans' hearts. The big lefty has become one of the league's most dominant starters, a legitimate American League Rookie of the Year candidate, and one of the game's rising stars, all while looking like your neighborhood plumber.
As much as his sizzling performance, 3.15 ERA, 3.09 FIP, and 28.9 percent strikeout rate, have grabbed fans' attention, it's his affable personality and on-field hijinks that have truly won him loyal followers.
After hugging Seattle Mariners' slugger Dominic Canzone, someone he later admitted he hardly knows, on a tag play on August 31, Tolle one-upped himself by hilariously doing a push-up after slipping while delivering a pitch during his September 6 outing against the Baltimore Orioles. Despite goofing off for a moment, he was all business, mowing down the O's with 12 strikeouts over six innings of one-run ball.
What's not to love? Not many lefties, rookies or otherwise, have Tolle's strikeout prowess. Not many people have his infectious energy and sense of whimsy. Even New York Yankees fans are taking note and enjoying the Tolle experience.

Speaking of the Yankees, they have their own ascending young ace, but while Tolle represents the light, New York's Cam Schlittler might as well be the king of darkness.
Schlittler grew up a Red Sox fan in Walpole, Mass, and knows full well what this rivalry can be. That didn't stop him from painting Sox fans in the worst possible light ahead of his Fenway debut back in April. Then, in July, Schlittler reignited the war of words with Red Sox fans before it came to light that he hilariously watches Jared Carrabis clips to get fired up before starts against Boston.

The way the AL playoff race is shaping up, the Red Sox and Yankees will once again match up in the AL Wild Card Series. New York currently holds the fourth seed while Boston holds the fifth. The way things look, the only possible change is the Red Sox potentially leapfrogging the Yankees, as the two nemeses seem destined for another collision course.
If we're lucky, the pitching rotations could align to bring us a Tolle-Schlittler duel that would literally feel like a battle of good and evil. We're rooting for it, and even more so if it were to take place at Fenway. The best way to avenge the dismantling Schlittler performed against the Sox's lineup last October would be to match him and his need to stoke the flames against the most unbothered guy on the planet, Tolle.
Not only that, but this could be the next great rivalry within the greater competition between these two juggernauts. Tolle clearly loves pitching in Boston and hopefully is here for the long run. The Yankees don't really do early extensions, but based solely on on-field talent, they'd be wise to lock up Schlittler even if they've already missed out on any potential cost savings.
“Boston is a baseball city. I love that people get the game. You feel like you have the whole city behind you. It’s special, something that not a lot of places get. I love it. Right now, there’s no other place I’d want to pitch,” Tolle said back in August.
We might not deserve Tolle, but he's the hero we need. If he gets the opportunity to vanquish the biggest villain in Red Sox Nation this October, the victory will be even sweeter.
