Willson Contreras has been loving his role as one of the three All-Star Game representatives for the Boston Red Sox. He took up the villain role in the Home Run Derby as he encouraged the boos that rained down on him from Philadelphia Phillies fans in the audience. Contreras' five-game suspension is carrying through the All-Star break, likely amplifying the villain narrative.
Contreras also made sure fans knew how much he loves representing the Red Sox. He's praised Boston from the fans to the front office and made one thing clear: he doesn't want to go anywhere ahead of the trade deadline.
"The energy that Fenway brings is really unique. I just like it — I just love it there. And I told them, too, 'just leave me here. I want to stay here,'" Contreras said to the "Section 10" podcast at All-Star media day.
The Red Sox were in an uncertain position just weeks ago. They weren't completely out of the playoff race in the underwhelming American League, but they seemed like sure-fire sellers based on the market — Sonny Gray and Aroldis Chapman are both impending free agents, and Contreras and a few others are on short-term deals that could net quite a return while other middling AL teams focused on buying.

But the Red Sox have instead gone off on a tear, with plenty of help from Contreras as he awaited his suspension ruling, to establish themselves as clear buyers. Boston sits in third place in the American League East and half a game out of the third Wild Card spot after three consecutive sweeps on the road.
Contreras is seemingly enthusiastic about the Sox's new standing — enough to tell the front office. The first baseman has reportedly told Boston's brass that he won't waive his no-trade clause to be moved in the event that he's asked, first reported by Rob Bradford of WEEI. Now that Boston is climbing up the AL, that request may have never come, but it's exciting to hear that Contreras wants to stick around no matter what.
Even before the Sox's hot streak, there was justified resistance to trading Contreras. He's one of the few veterans on the team and the energy he brings to the game wouldn't be found in any of Boston's young players. He's the best defensive first baseman the Red Sox have fielded in ages and he's already just four home runs away from passing his career-high (subscription required). He leads Boston with 20 bombs so far this year.
Contreras is clearly part of the solution in Boston and it has a few players on its roster and in its system who could learn from his style of play. His gritty attitude is perfect for the city and the team as it hopes to complete a rebuild of many years. He's under contract until after the 2028 season and, if he continues playing as he has this season, the Red Sox should hold onto him for the duration of his deal.
