The Boston Red Sox's offense has looked a bit lost since star rookie Roman Anthony was placed on the injured list with an oblique strain. His stint on the 10-day IL began on September 3, as did a three-game losing skid for Boston.

The Red Sox mustered seven runs over their three losses from September 3-6, and four of them came in just one inning in an attempted rally that fell short. Boston on September 7 stared down a potential sweep at the hands of the Arizona Diamondbacks, but an unexpected bat woke up at just the right time.

Nick Sogard came to the plate in the ninth inning of a 4-4 deadlock with Nate Eaton and Romy Gonzalez on first and second base, respectively. Sogard lifted a double into the left field gap to score both runners on base and claim a 6-4 lead for the Sox. Carlos Narváez followed with a single to plate Sogard for a run of insurance.

Aroldis Chapman was his usual self in the bottom of the ninth inning, and he got through the end of the Snakes' order without allowing any damage. Sogard, one of September's many unlikely heroes, helped Boston crush a four-game losing streak in its tracks (subscription required).

Sogard hasn't been the most reliable depth bat in the Red Sox's arsenal this year, and he seemed an unfortunate choice to replace the red-hot Anthony on the roster. He was even a strange choice to pinch-hit for Connor Wong, who has found himself at the plate recently to the tune of a .271/.327/.375 slash line in his last 15 appearances, in such a moment. But the utility infielder rose to the occasion.

Sogard had just a .242/.315/.318 slash line in the big leagues before his heroics on Sunday. He'd logged just five extra-base hits and and four RBI in his 19 appearances to that point. Sogard helped the Red Sox jump up to 1.5 games back of the Yankees for the first American League Wild Card spot, and their upcoming series against the A's could help them claw back into second place.
