After all the drama that followed the Boston Red Sox during the first few months of the 2025 season, they suddenly look like a team of destiny as baseball opens the final month of the regular season.
The latest example of that was during the Red Sox's 6-4 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Monday. Trevor Story's swing in the sixth inning was certainly one of the difference makers, and a play Red Sox fans truly had to see to believe.
The score reads as Story hitting his 23rd home run of the season, but that doesn't tell the full story.
As Major League Baseball reminded everyone, there's a reason the right field foul pole at Fenway Park is called the Pesky Pole. Guardians' right fielder Jhonkensy Noel found that when the ball hit by Story seemingly hit his glove before touching the foul pole. Story immediately stopped at second, thinking it was going to be a ground-rule double. The play was reviewed and overturned. Story was awarded a home run, and it was a play that was still talked about in Boston's clubhouse after the game.
It's called the Pesky Pole for a reason!

Trevor Story's latest Fenway home run has Red Sox fans believing in magic
Red Sox manager Alex Cora added some sarcasm to the situation, reflecting on "Trevor with that bomb" being one of the key moments over the team's victory. Story also added his thoughts on the play, and spoke to the confusion about what was going on in everyone's mind while watching the play unfold.
“Yeah, I thought maybe a ground-rule double at first, because I saw him touch it fair and then it kind of hopped out foul, was what I thought at first,” Story told reporters after the game. “But obviously it hopped out of his glove and touched the pole. Just a tricky one for sure, but glad it worked out.”
Throughout the course of a 162-game season, things happen that can't be described. It's those undefined moments that suggest there is some magic to be had for a team's success. That was the case for the Red Sox on Monday, as Story's "bomb" of a home run may just prove they are the team of destiny with the postseason approaching.
Remember, this is the same team that traded away their best player, somehow got better, and propelled to the top of the AL Wild Card race (with a chance of winning the division before all is said and done). Story's pesky homer is just more proof the Red Sox have a little bit of baseball magic on their side.
