Boston Red Sox prospect Roman Anthony couldn't wait for the first pitch to do something good on March 30. The outfielder assisted me in getting some baseballs to two children with Down syndrome before the game, and it's just another reason to love him.
Anthony was also ready to hit baseballs. On the game's first pitch, the left-handed hitter smoked a triple off a rehabbing Edward Cabrera. He was thrown out trying to stretch it into an inside-the-park home run.
We've already seen fireworks from Anthony early in the 2025 season. What's on his mind, though? We caught up with the top prospect in baseball to find out.
Red Sox prospect Roman Anthony shares some spring training and early season thoughts
Q: We're going to start all the way back at the Spring Breakout game. Could you hear the fans screaming "overrated" before you hit the viral home run?
"Yeah, there weren't many people there. It was a group of guys, and it was pretty easy to hear."
Q: Did you say anything?
"No, I didn't say anything because I felt the homer spoke for itself. I don't really give people like that any credit."
Q: How did you feel spring training went for you?
"It was great. A lot of learning and a lot of veteran guys around, a lot of new faces. Obviously the additions we made this offseason, signing a few guys who are winners. I learned a lot from guys who have more experience than me.
"So I would say it was a new experience and a great time."
Q: Was there a veteran who you sponged off of?
"Trayce, right there (points to Trayce Thompson). I would say Trayce. [Alex] Bregman being next to us in the clubhouse. He was great. In the outfield, like I just mentioned Trayce, JD (Jarren Duran), Ref (Rob Refsnyder), and I can go down the list. [Walker] Buehler was great to me as well. Really, just anyone in there. They're all great guys."
Q: You, Marcelo Mayer, and Kristian Campbell went on what was essentially a press tour for the Red Sox this offseason. What was it like to see him get called up? What was your immediate reaction?
"It was awesome. We found out on the plane on the way to Mexico. I was super excited for him. We've seen what he's done already in a short time. It's exciting. He's an exciting player and a good buddy of ours. So, just happy for him."
Q: Have you guys gotten to watch any of those games live?
"Yeah, I got to watch only one because we've been playing at similar times. I saw him during our game in Worcester. They had it on the scoreboard, and he doubled off deGrom. That was pretty cool. I got to watch that one live.
"Just trying to keep up with it. We're both in season now and both playing. But always keeping up with him and always texting him. He's killing it."
Q: Two-homer game on Sunday (March 30). How did that second one feel?
"Felt great. It felt better than the first one. It felt great especially in that weather, it was cold. Got a few good pitches to hit and didn't miss them. Felt great."
Q: You and Marcelo Mayer are still here. Have there been talks between you two about the plans of getting to Boston?
"Not really. I think we're just present where we are right now. Enjoy the guys we have here, and continue to learn from the experience around us. Just not really look too far into the future and not really have any expectations of ourselves. Just go out there and keep playing."
