When it was announced that the Boston Red Sox had finally pulled the trigger on a trade for long-time target and ace Garrett Crochet, it came as both a shock and delight for many within Red Sox Nation. However, no one shared in this shock quite like top prospect Marcelo Mayer.
Mayer, who revealed the story to Rob Bradford on the "Baseball Isn’t Boring" podcast, said that he was told of the trade by his friend and former teammate, Chase Meidroth, on the phone. Meidroth shared that Mayer's fellow "Big Three" prospect Kyle Teel was a part of the deal for the White Sox ace.
However, as Mayer explained, things only got crazier. While discussing who could be going with Teel to Chicago, Meidroth got a call from Breslow, revealing that he had been included in the deal.
For Breslow and the Red Sox, this was a trade that had to be made, as it was no secret that the Sox needed to make significant pitching upgrades if they wanted to compete in 2025. Crochet fits this bill perfectly, as in 219 innings, the 25-year-old has pitched to a 3.29 ERA, a 2.84 FIP, and an ERA+ of 128. Additionally, with Walker Buehler and Patrick Sandoval's signings, Boston's starters have gotten a significant boost heading into the season.

This trade spells an excellent opportunity for the infield prospect Meidroth, as the 23-year-old had a breakout year with Worcester in 2024. In 122 games, Meidroth slashed 293/.437/.400 to go along with 57 RBI. While these numbers are impressive, Meidroth was blocked from the big leagues by Boston's bevy of infield prospect talent. However, with a new team, he has the opportunity to make the Opening Day roster and prove why he can be a productive bat at the major league level.
While losing the likes of Teel and Meidroth hurts, Breslow did a great job with this trade. Despite rumors saying a Crochet trade could require the likes of Roman Anthony, Mayer, and Kristian Campbell, Breslow was able to retain all three and land a much-needed ace for Boston at a significantly lower cost. And fans got a pretty hilarious reaction from Mayer out of it, too.
