The Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers made a last-minute trade to bolster the latter's bullpen depth before Opening Day.
The Red Sox sent righty reliever Noah Davis to Los Angeles for cash considerations just hours before Boston's 2025 season is set to open. Davis will be added to the Dodgers' 40-man roster, then optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City, according to MLB Trade Rumors. LA placed Emmett Sheehan onto the 60-day injured list to free up space on their 40-man roster for Davis.
Davis was drafted by the Reds organization but has spent much of his career in the Rockies' system after he was traded there in 2021. He's only ever played in the majors for Colorado and has a 7.71 ERA over 51.1 innings from 2022-24.
The Red Sox signed Davis to a minor league deal in December and gave him a non-roster invite to spring training. The righty posted a middling spring to go along with his shaky stats in the major leagues. He surrendered five runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts over 9.1 innings in the Grapefruit League.

The Dodgers expertly boosted their pitching staff this offseason, both in terms of talent and depth, after their World Series win in 2024 with just three healthy starters in their rotation. LA's bullpen carried it throughout the postseason, and the additions of Kirby Yates and Tanner Scott will no doubt help keep the back of the pitching staff strong.
Davis will likely serve as an emergency depth candidate for the Dodgers in case of injury or other issues that could take relievers out of the game. The Red Sox only had Davis for a few months, but they were able to get some cash from the Dodgers for him — a solid outcome for a struggling depth piece Boston doesn't really need.
