The Boston Red Sox continue to be the most confusing team in baseball. They swept the admittedly terrible Kansas City Royals, then get swept by the admittedly also not-very-good Minnesota Twins.
All the weirdness continues to leave us wondering what state the farm system will be in by the trade deadline. Will they be selling or buying? Could we see some of the big performers sold off to try and salvage the season?
I guess we’ll find out in due time. For now, there were some massive performances by top-100 prospects.
Red Sox Prospect Update: Kyson Witherspoon, Franklin Arias justify new top 100 placements
Worcester Red Sox (Triple-A)
Allan Castro had a much-needed bounce-back week in Worcester. The switch-hitting outfielder went 0-for-19 last week, but managed a 5-for-15 week with two walks, a steal, and one RBI this time around. Castro is slashing .190/.263/.301 with two doubles and five home runs. He’s driven in 24 runs, scored 18, and stolen nine bases.
Noah Song had a dreadful April (7.53 ERA) but has been absolutely nails in May. The right-handed pitcher allowed one hit over 4 1/3 scoreless innings in his three appearances this week. He struck out six batters and walked one. Song has a 5.61 ERA on the season, but boasts a 2.79 ERA, .118 BAA, and 0.72 WHIP in May.
Portland Sea Dogs (Double-A)
Anthony Eyanson made his second Double-A start this week and managed only five hitless innings. The right-handed pitcher has a 0.61 ERA, .108 BAA, and 0.58 WHIP in seven starts. He has 42 strikeouts and seven walks in 29 1/3 innings.
Blake Wehunt had his best start of the season (after doing the same thing last week). The right-handed pitcher allowed four hits over five shutout innings. He walked just one batter and struck out a season-high 11 batters. Wehunt has a 4.32 ERA, .277 BAA, and 1.50 WHIP in six starts. He has 27 strikeouts and seven walks in 16 2/3 innings.
Jedixson Paez tossed three perfect innings, striking out four batters. The right-handed pitcher has a 4.22 ERA, .179 BAA, and 0.75 WHIP in five appearances (three starts) in Double-A. He has 10 strikeouts and only one walk in 10 2/3 innings.
John Holobetz surrendered five hits over six scoreless innings, striking out six batters without walking any. The right-handed pitcher is back down to a 4.06 ERA, .247 BAA, and 1.27 WHIP in eight games (seven starts). He has 40 strikeouts compared to 12 walks in 37 2/3 innings.
Franklin Arias is back to smoking home runs. The right-handed-hitting shortstop went 9-for-21 with one triple and three home runs this week. He’s slashing .346/.422/.662 with seven doubles, one triple, and 11 home runs. Arias has 29 RBI, 27 runs scored, and four steals.
Johanfran Garcia went 7-for-19 with a home run and a walk-off single this week. The right-handed-hitting catcher has a .250/.308/.476 slash line with one double and six home runs. He’s driven in 16 runs, scored 12, and stolen one base.
Greenville Drive (High-A)
Kyson Witherspoon allowed one run on two hits over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out six batters and walked two. The right-handed pitcher has a 6.46 ERA, .274 BAA, and 1.60 WHIP in eight starts. He has 32 strikeouts and 18 walks in 30 2/3 innings.
Alex Bouchard allowed two runs on one hit over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five batters and walked two. The right-handed pitcher has a 4.25 ERA, .220 BAA, and 1.38 WHIP in seven games (three starts). He has 26 strikeouts and 17 walks in 29 2/3 innings.
Ben Hansen surrendered one run on three hits over 4 1/3 innings. He didn’t walk anyone and struck out a career-high nine batters. The right-handed pitcher has a 7.59 ERA, .292 BAA, and 1.50 WHIP in eight games (two starts). He has 33 strikeouts and six walks in 21 1/3 innings.
Isaiah Jackson went 5-for-14 with a double and two home runs. The left-handed hitting outfielder is slashing .242/.336/.424 with four doubles, one triple, and six home runs. He’s driven in 27 runs, scored 20, and stolen two bases.
Yoeilin Cespedes went 4-for-12 with two home runs and five RBI this week. The right-handed hitting infielder is slashing .314/.369/.572 with 14 doubles and nine home runs (he hit 10 all of last season). He’s driven in 29 runs and scored 33.
Salem RidgeYaks (Single-A)
Leighton Finley tossed five scoreless frames in his lone start. The right-handed pitcher allowed three hits and two walks while striking out six batters. He has a 3.41 ERA, .267 BAA, and 1.48 WHIP in seven appearances (six starts). Finley has 24 strikeouts and 16 walks in 31 2/3 innings.
Jose Bello allowed one unearned run on three hits over 5 2/3 innings in his start this week. The right-handed pitcher struck out three batters and walked one. Bello has a 2.82 ERA, .217 BAA, and 1.21 WHIP in seven appearances (four starts). He has 18 strikeouts and nine walks in 22 1/3 innings.
Stanley Tucker went 5-for-11 with one double, one home run, one steal, and five RBI this week. The right-handed hitting utility is slashing .333/.421/.545 with three doubles, one triple, and three home runs in Single-A. He’s driven in 13 runs, scored 16, and stolen eight bases.
Enddy Azocar went 6-for-21 with three doubles and a triple this week. The right-handed hitting outfielder is slashing .295/.344/.530 with 15 doubles, three triples, and six home runs. He’s driven in 26 runs, scored 31, and stolen seven bases.
Givian Sirvania made his Single-A debut this week and went 2-for-6 with a double, two RBI, a run scored, and one steal.
