The Boston Red Sox called Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Jedixson Paez up as their two September roster expansion candidates, but they've also recalled a third player for an unfortunate reason.
The Red Sox have played Tyron Guerrero on the 15-day injured list with shoulder inflammation, first reported by Chris Cotillo of MassLive. They've recalled Wyatt Olds to take his place in the bullpen.
The flamethrower Guerrero struggled during his August 31 appearance against the Seattle Mariners, an obvious indication that something was up with the lefty. He allowed three runs on three hits in a third of an inning in one of his worst outings all year.
Guerrero's story with the Red Sox this year has been incredible. The veteran's professional baseball career began with the San Diego Padres in 2009 when they signed him as an amateur free agent. After stints with the Padres, Miami Marlins and Chicago White Sox, Guerrero pitched in Japan, returned to the minor leagues, pitched in Mexico, and had another stint in Japan before he landed with the Red Sox in 2026.

Guerrero's career took some time to take off, but he's become one of the most critical arms out of the Sox's bullpen. He's posted a 3.26 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 36 strikeouts and seven walks over 38.2 innings this season. Guerrero's fastball averages 100.2 miles per hour, which ranks in the 99th percentile in the league. He boasts elite extension of seven-foot-one and just a 4.4 percent walk rate.
A shoulder injury is a bad sign for any pitcher — just look at Garrett Crochet who's been on the IL with shoulder inflammation (and eventually a lat strain) since April 26. There has been no report on the severity of Guerrero's injury, but the Red Sox will be lucky if it's minor.
Olds was not eligible to be called up as part of September's roster expansion because he was optioned too recently, but he can skip the waiting period in the event of an injury. Olds hasn't allowed an earned run on four hits with eight strikeouts and three walks over six innings.
Guerrero returning before the playoffs would be the best-case scenario. He's been electric out of Boston's bullpen before Garrett Whitlock, Erik Miller and Aroldis Chapman. Hopefully, he can get healthy enough to continue his incredible turnaround season with his childhood favorite baseball team.
