Ahead of their May 22 homestand-opening game against the Minnesota Twins, the Boston Red Sox called up a fresh arm to bolster their bullpen.

The Red Sox have activated reliever Tayron Guerrero from Triple-A Worcester, first reported by Andrew Parker of SoxProspects. A corresponding move will be necessary to fit Guerrero on the 40-man roster, but it hasn't yet been announced. Someone could be placed on the 60-day injured list to open a spot — Kutter Crawford could be an option, or Trevor Story if he decides to undergo the sports hernia surgery he's been debating.

Update: Zack Kelly has been optioned to Triple-A Worcester.

Guerrero, a 35-year-old journeyman, hasn't appeared in the big leagues since 2019. He made his big league debut for the San Diego Padres, the team that signed him as an international free agent out of Colombia, in 2016. Between 2018-19, he pitched 104 innings for the Miami Marlins before he moved through the minor league affiliates of a few MLB teams and some international squads.

The veteran righty has posted an outstanding 0.92 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 22 strikeouts and six walks over 19.1 innings with the WooSox. Guerrero has touched 103 miles per hour on the radar gun and caught Sox fans' eye the night before his promotion when four of his pitches registered over 102 miles per hour.

Guerrero posted a 5.77 ERA over 106 innings across his three major league stints from years ago. He's also appeared in NPB, Venezuelan Winter League, Dominican Winter League, Mexican League and Mexican Pacific Winter League teams in his career. He spent the most time in NPB, with a 4.39 ERA over 65.2 innings for the Chiba Lotte Marines. He also represented Colombia in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

In an interview with Christopher Smith of MassLive, Guerrero shared that he learned about baseball by watching the 2007 Red Sox win the World Series on his grandfather's TV in Colombia when he was 16 years old. Guerrero has dreamed about playing for the Red Sox ever since, and his dream could be realized as soon as tomorrow night.

Years of work have resulted in Guerrero finally getting the call back up to the big leagues from the team he's always hoped to represent. Hopefully this is the stint that leads to Guerrero sticking in the major leagues full-time to put an exclamation point on his return story.
