Boston Red Sox fans endured the emotional rollercoaster of a lifetime on Sunday when, just hours after the team completed a sweep of the New York Yankees, FanSided's Robert Murray reported that three-time All-Star Rafael Devers had been traded to the San Francisco Giants.

In his final game with the Red Sox – a 2-0 shutout win over the Yankees on Sunday afternoon – Devers came up big with a solo home run in the fifth inning. In celebration of Devers' 15th homer of the year, the Red Sox social media team posted a GIF of Devers on the team's official X account with the caption, "That is... GONE!"

Just a few hours later, the post took on an entirely new meaning as Devers was, in fact, gone.

In return for Devers, the Red Sox receive right-hander Jordan Hicks, left-hander Kyle Harrison, outfield/first base prospect James Tibbs and right-handed pitching prospect Jose Bello. The Giants will take on the entire $250 million remaining on Devers' contract as part of the deal.

The Red Sox signed Devers to an 11-year, $331 million contract extension in 2023. According to Spotrac, Devers is making $27 million this season and in 2026, and he will be making $28.5 million each year from 2027 to 2033.

Red Sox send Rafael Devers to Giants in shocking blockbuster deal

The writing may have been on the wall for Devers' eventual departure from Boston after the Red Sox signed third baseman Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million contract this offseason, but hardly anyone could have expected it to go down this way.

Despite a slow start to the season and all the drama surrounding his transition from third base to designated hitter – and the Red Sox's failed attempts to get him to change positions yet again – Devers is still hitting .272 with 15 home runs and 58 RBI through 73 games this year.

Once one of the faces of the Red Sox franchise, Devers will have to face his former team soon, as Boston will play the Giants in San Francisco next weekend.
