On Sunday night, FanSided insider Robert Murray reported that the Boston Red Sox had traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants after a contentious start to the season between Devers and the team. Trade rumors ran rampant after drama regarding Devers' third base status and then a potential move to first base, rumors that died down but which the Red Sox never actually dismissed outright.

This is a stunning move for Boston, and one that is sure to leave fans just as divided as the drama that undoubtedly led to it in the first place. The Giants, who are neck-and-neck with the Dodgers for first place in the NL West, will assume the rest of Devers' mammoth 10-year, $313.5 million contract in an obvious show of force. They clearly have no intention of just rolling over at the perpetual threat LA poses.

In return, the Giants are sending pitchers Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison, along with No. 4 prospect and 2024 first-round draft pick James Tibbs and 2023 international signing Jose Bello.

Red Sox shockingly trade Rafael Devers to Giants after rumors died down

The timing of this cannot be more heartbreaking for a player who was supposed to be a Red Sox for life. Although he went just 1-8 in their first two games against the Yankees this weekend, he hit what has now proven to be his last homer as a Boston Red Sox just hours before the trade, his 15th of the season, off of Yankees ace Max Fried.

Whichever side fans landed on when it came to the Devers v. Red Sox debate, this is a potentially franchise-altering decision that the front office could very well live to regret in a hurry, and fans should be mourning the unceremonious end to Devers' tenure. Giants headliners Hicks and Harrison have not done good work for the Giants this season, and while Tibbs has been excellent in the minors, he's years away from a major league debut while Devers was supposed to be the face on the franchise for the rest of his career.

This telegraphs like a white flag for the rest of the Red Sox's season. Devers led active Red Sox batters in most hitting metrics, especially with Alex Bregman currently down with a quad injury, and he is the only player on the team to have faithfully started in every single game of the season thus far. The Giants have added a powerhouse to their roster, and the Red Sox seem content to stay floating around .500 and missing out on the postseason once again.
