The New York Yankees' 2025 season ended on October 8 after losing three games to the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS. Boston Red Sox fans won't complain about New York's dismissal, since they eliminated Boston in the Wild Card series just last week.
After their series win and first advancement to the ALCS since 2016, the Blue Jays popped bottles and celebrated in the Yankees' away clubhouse. Toronto's star slugger, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., wasted no time making jokes at New York's expense, and he did so with a reference to a Red Sox legend.
"DAAAAAAA YANKEES LOSE," Guerrero cheered on a FOX Sports postgame interview, as a teammate poured a beer over his head.
David Ortiz has used those words to troll the Yankees for years since he took up a position on FOX Sports' MLB postseason panel. The joke is a reference to iconic (now retired) Yankees radio commentator John Sterling, who would say, "The Yankees win," with a drawn out "the," after every victory.

Ortiz burst into laughter at Guerrero's joke, while his co-panelists Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez looked less than thrilled. Guerrero and Ortiz repeated the jab four more times before the end of the. interview.
Guerrero and Ortiz have known each other since Guerrero was a child. The first baseman would attend MLB events with his father, Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero, and Ortiz would often be there, as a 10-time All-Star and Home Run Derby champion.
Guerrero also has a longstanding, public beef with the Yankees organization. The slugger signed a 14-year, $500 million extension with the Blue Jays early this season, but he was initially slated to hit free agency after the 2025 season. In 2022, Guerrero said in a podcast interview that he would never sign with the Yankees.
"I like to play in New York. I like to kill the Yankees. I would never sign with the Yankees, not even (when I'm) dead," he said.
Many Red Sox fans took that quote and ran with it, hoping it meant he'd want to sign with Boston as a free agent. He never reached free agency, however, and likely costs more than the Red Sox's ownership would be willing to spend. Still, his disdain for the Yankees is funny (and relatable).
Guerrero posted an excellent series against the Yankees at the plate and was a huge part of Toronto's victory. He logged nine hits, three of them homers, five runs and nine RBI over four games. The Blue Jays will play either the Tigers and Mariners in the ALCS, and their gritty offense will give either one of those teams a rough time.
