Neither the Boston Red Sox nor New York Yankees made it anywhere close to the World Series this year, but fans of the former club still got something to laugh about. The Yankees became the punchline for the third postseason in a row.

Pat Murphy, manager of the World Series champion Milwaukee Brewers, spoke to his first baseman Jake Bauers after the confetti fell. Bauers handed his skipper the ball with which he helped record the final out, and Murphy offered some funny comments about the Yankees to the impending free agent.

"You're gonna be a rich f---er. Just remember when you were on that horse s--t Yankees team and you guys were all playing for yourself, just remember, this is the way we used to do it," Murphy said.

The Brewers are a scrappy, small-ball team of mostly homegrown players or trade pieces that gives credit to the power of friendship for helping them win. The Yankees are thought of as the opposite — a big money club where power is everything. Hitting a lot of homers hasn't helped New York win a title since 2009.

Bauers was a Yankee in 2023, a rare season when they missed the playoffs. It was New York's first playoff miss since 2016 and it hasn't missed the postseason since. Bauers was hardly a valuable contributor to that team with a .202/.279/.413 slash line over 84 games, but it's hilarious to hear the Yankees brought up after his World Series win.

New York has been the butt of the joke for the last three postseasons. In 2024, the Yankees went all the way to the World Series but lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games. After the series, LA publicly shamed the Yankees by sharing its scouting report, in which it flamed New York's defense and fundamentals.

In 2025, the Yankees lost the ALDS to the Toronto Blue Jays in four games. With his ski goggles on while covered in champagne, Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. uttered David Ortiz's famous line, "Da Yankees lose," and the moment went insanely viral.

After their ALDS elimination in 2026, the Yankees haven't been able to catch a break. Their offense disappeared against the Rays' pitching, their defense was inconsistent and fans are still up in arms that Aaron Boone has been welcomed back for another year. Players have been vocal about the Yankees' "standard" not being upheld, but the front office seemingly has no plans of changing its operations.

Conversely, the Red Sox, despite their lack of playoff success in recent years, are remembered with reverence for some of their postseason showings. The spirit of Boston's 2004 run has twice been invoked this playoffs, when the Dodgers and Rays mustered one win to stave off elimination against the Brewers, but the 0-3 comeback remains impossible for anyone else.

While playoff wins continue to elude the Red Sox, the Yankees keep giving their fans something to chuckle about. It's even funnier to hear the digs come from the manager of a team that didn't even play them this postseason.
