Shameless Dodgers fans desperately invoke power of Dave Roberts, Red Sox’s 2004 playoff vibes

The Milwaukee Brewers have the Los Angeles Dodgers on the ropes. They've beeaten the Dodgers on all fronts so far this NLCS, with superior pitching and outscoring them 15-7. The superteam looks human.

LA is down 0-3 in the series and one more loss will end their three-peat bid. A rebound from an 0-3 deficit is deeply improbable, but Boston Red Sox fans lived through one 22 years ago.

The 2004 Red Sox are the only team in MLB history to erase a three-game playoff deficit and advance to the next series. Dodgers fans are hopeful (and utterly desperate) to see their team, fronted by 2004 baserunning hero Dave Roberts, do the same thing. It isn't going to happen.

LA is the worst hitting team still in the postseason, despite its dominance all year. During the NLCS, the Dodgers are slashing .165/.264/.187 as a team comapred to the Brewers' .281/.373/.458 line. The Dodgers haven't hit a single home run in the series while the Brewers have hit five, including back-to-back, game-changing blasts against Blake Snell in Game 3. LA has a .388 OPS over 16 at-bats with runners in scoring position while Milwaukee has a .788 OPS in 27 such opportunities.

Dodgers fans are hopeful their team can pull a 2004 Red Sox to stay alive against Brewers, but it won't happen

The 2004 Red Sox batted .302/.403/.457 against the Los Angeles Angels in the ALDS and .277/.344/.439 against the New York Yankees in the ALCS. Boston was a much hotter team than LA entering what could've been its final game and a lot more will have to change for the Dodgers to finally match up to what the Brewers have been bringing.

Plus, the Red Sox had David Ortiz. Nothing more needs to be said about that.

Roberts said he doesn't plan to use the 2004 comeback to inspire his players. The Dodgers need to come up with their own motivation to reach their three-peat dreams — they certainly don't have the same level of desperation as the 2004 Sox did, playing against their bitter rivals with an 86-year World Series drought on the line.

Dodgers fans shouldn't get their hopes up when it comes to a repeat of 2004. There's a reason it's only happened one time. The Brewers have been the better baseball team for the entire series so far and nothing about how the Dodgers have played suggests that'll change in time to keep them alive to see their third straight World Series.
