The Boston Red Sox on November 25 began their slew of offseason moves by trading for Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals. Months later, on April 6, that trade was completed.

The Red Sox sent pitching prospect Patrick Galle to the Cardinals as the player to be named later in the Gray trade. The Cardinals have assigned him to Single-A Palm Beach. Officially. St. Louis received Galle, Richard Fitts and Brandon Clarke in return for one year of Gray's services and around $20 million off his contract.

The Red Sox selected Galle in the 17th round of the 2025 MLB Draft. He pitched just 5.1 innings for the Single-A Salem Red Sox last season and only reached two this year before Boston completed the Gray trade. He clocked a 4.91 ERA with three strikeouts and seven walks in his short tenure in the Red Sox organization.

Before his professional career began a year ago, Galle was a two-year reliever for Ole Miss. He logged a 8.18 ERA with 15 strikeouts and six walks over 11 innings across 14 appearances for the Rebels.

Galle has also suited up for the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod Baseball League. He struggled in his first season down the Cape in 2024 with a 5.19 ERA with 19 strikeouts and 17 walks in 17.1 innings. Things changed for Galle in the summer of 2025 when Galle posted a 1.04 ERA, but his command is still shaky with more walks (10) than strikeouts (eight) on his stat sheet.

If the Red Sox's recent trade luck holds, Galle could become a quick staple in the Cardinals organization. Outfield prospect James Tibbs III has been slugging at a torrid pace for the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, Kyle Harrison has put on a pitching clinic for the Milwaukee Brewers and former Sox prospect Blaze Jordan is raking for the Cardinals.

At least Gray has been the best of Boston's offseason pitching acquisitions so far — Johan Oviedo has been placed on the injured list and Ranger Suárez is struggling. Gray had an ugly first outing with the Sox that lasted just four innings (six hits, three earned runs, a walk, five strikeouts) but he put on a much better show against the San Diego Padres, with two runs on four hits with three strikeouts over six innings pitched.
