The Boston Red Sox and Colorado Rockies haven't faced off much since the 2007 World Series, but sparks flew on Wednesday afternoon in one of the more bizarre benches-clearing incidents you'll see this season. The center of the issue involved Rockies pitcher Cal Quantrill and Sox backup catcher Reese McGuire.
Huh?!
The rubber match saw the Rockies jump out to an 8-2 lead, which has since ballooned to a 19-3 cushion in a score that would better resemble a Broncos vs Patriots matchup.
In the top of the fourth inning, Quantrill got McGuire to pop out on a 3-2 count with two outs. But before the ball was even caught, Quantrill started to jaw at McGuire as he jogged down to first base. And from what we gathered, it was a pretty pointed NSFW insult that rightfully got McGuire and the rest of the Sox riled up (if you remember McGuire getting into some legal trouble back in 2020).
We'll have to wait until the postgame to figure out why Quantrill said what we think he said, and why he felt the need to go after McGuire, but that's what makes this fun, right?
Red Sox vs Rockies game sees benches clear after incident with Cal Quantrill, Reese McGuire
Nobody was hit by a pitch. Tensions weren't high. But gone are the days of the Red Sox inquiring about Quantrill at the trade deadline, unless they want to get rid of McGuire of be viewed as baseball's greatest peacemakers.
On the same day the Red Sox and manager Alex Cora agreed to a contract extension, drama ensues in a manner nobody could have predicted. Wait ... this all happened on the 20-year anniversary of the Jason Varitek vs Alex Rodriguez brawl that had the Red Sox and Yankees going at it during a game at Fenway Park?! What are the odds?
Stay tuned for what's to come out of the postgame because we really need answers after what we just witnessed.
