The Boston Red Sox will head to Colorado for one of their final series before the trade deadline. They may be able to get a glimpse of a potential trade target.
Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow highlighted starting pitching as one of his ballclub's biggest needs, and veteran righty Cal Quantrill may be available before the trade deadline.
MLB insider Mark Feinsand listed Quantrill among many other starting pitchers who may be dished before July 30. The 29-year-old, six-year MLB veteran was designated for assignment by the Guardians after he posted a rough 2023 campaign. He logged a 5.24 ERA in 99.2 innings last year, but Quantrill's looking more like his old self in Colorado.
The righty has posted a 4.15 ERA over a National League-leading 20 starts. Quantrill hasn't thrown many strikeouts this year — he's at 83 innings —and his walk rate is higher than the league average, but he has some postseason experience from his seasons in Cleveland that the Red Sox's hurlers lack.
Red Sox could pursue a trade for Rockies starter Cal Quantrill to boost rotation
Quantrill is arbitration-eligible for the 2025 season and could end up being more than just a rental for Boston if it goes through with a move. He would also be a relatively inexpensive addition to the Red Sox, as he's only making around $6.5 million this season.
Quantrill is slated to start the July 24 matchup between the Sox and the Rox. Boston will be able to see his stuff firsthand and, hopefully, bring home a win to keep the front office invested in a buyers' mindset as the trade deadline nears.
