The Boston Red Sox are hours away from their first MLB Draft with new chief baseball officer Craig Breslow at the helm of the organization.

Boston has drafted position players in the first round in the past five years. One of Breslow's missions is to revamp the Sox's pitching program — 2024 could be the year the Sox take a pitcher in the first round since first-time All-Star Tanner Houck was drafted in 2017.

The Red Sox have built one of the better farm systems in MLB in recent seasons, and they're primed to make it even better on July 14. Here's everything Red Sox Nation needs to know to watch the MLB Draft on TV and streaming and when to catch the Sox's first-round pick.

In 2021, MLB moved its draft festivities to begin the day before MLB All-Star events to get more eyes on the future of the league. There is some conflicting information out there about start times for pre-draft coverage — some sources say 5 p.m. EST, while some others claim 6 p.m. MLB Network and ESPN will be the main broadcasts for the event, so check your local listings if you're interested in the early coverage.

Day One of the Draft will contain rounds one and two, and the Red Sox have one pick in each round this year. The festivities will begin at 7 p.m.

Days Two and Three will follow on July 15 and 16, but in the afternoon so the event doesn't conflict with Monday's Home Run Derby and the All-Star Game on Tuesday evening. Tune in at 2 p.m., Eastern to catch the later rounds of action.

How to watch the 2024 MLB Draft

  • TV: Rounds 1-2 on ESPN, MLB Network, MLB.TV, Rounds 3-20 only on MLB.TV
  • Streaming: MLB.TV, MLB.com, MLB App

The entire draft will be streamable through MLB.TV, but only the first night's festivities will be broadcast on TV. ESPN and MLB Network will broadcast Sunday's events. They'll have detailed coverage with experts on air to break things down as the picks occur.

Day 2 and 3 feature less comprehensive coverage, but move much faster than Rounds 1 and 2. MLB.TV still offers good coverage of the later rounds and is a quality viewing option for passionate draft fans.

The Red Sox have three picks in the top 100 this season, including No. 12 in the first round, No. 50 in the second and No. 86 in the third.

MLB insider for ESPN Kiley McDaniel believes the draft "starts" around Boston's No. 12 pick — the top nine or 10 players are rather easy to determine, but anything could happen after the top few picks are made.

Boston might lose out on a few solid candidates with the 12th pick, but even a double-digit first-round choice can pay off in spades. Nomar Garciaparra was the No. 12 overall pick in the 1994 Draft.

McDaniel thinks the two best pitchers in the draft, Chase Burns and Hagen Smith, won't make it down to the Sox at pick No. 12. SoxProspects.com has a long list of quality first-round options for Boston for the first round, including pitchers Trey Yesavage, Cam Caminiti, William Schmidt and Ryan Sloan. They also listed a few position player targets, including outfielders Vance Honeycutt, James Tibbs, and Carson Benge, and third baseman Cam Smith.
