In the middle of last week, Boston Red Sox fans thought the team's two biggest stars were making progress in their injury recovery and approaching a return to action. But Roman Anthony experienced discomfort in his hand while swinging on May 29, and two days later, a new injury cropped up during Garrett Crochet's rehab.

Crochet has experienced lat tightness in the last few days, according to multiple sources. The ace was slated to face batters on Tuesday but his recovery progress will be halted until his soreness dies down. Crochet will see doctors and possibly undergo an MRI early this week.

Hopefully, doctors and scans have nothing overly serious to say about Crochet's new injury. Crochet thinks it could be minor, as he said to reporters after news of his soreness dropped.

"It feels like a very minor setback. It sucks to even call it a setback because it doesn’t feel like it even deserves that title. But I won’t be making the live on Tuesday, which sucks," he said, via Chris Cotillo of MassLive.

Garrett Crochet tells reporters his sudden lat soreness feels "minor," though Red Sox return remains a ways away

Unfortunately, Crochet also told reporters that he was still a ways from a rehab assignment and early in the build-up process before the lat soreness kicked in. Even if he wasn't shut down for soreness, there would still be weeks between now and his return to the Sox's rotation.

Fans are disgruntled with yet another "setback" in a key player's rehab, mostly because the Red Sox initially thought Crochet's injured list stint would be a short one. They said the same for Anthony, but neither has played in over three weeks. The team hasn't released a new timeline for Crochet's recovery, which is seemingly for the best.

Crochet had a 6.30 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 30 innings before his IL stint began retroactive to April 26. The lefty didn't look like his usual self on the mound — his current ERA metric is the highest of his career over parts of six seasons — so fans weren't exactly surprised to hear something was up with his health.

If the injury was holding Crochet back in the beginning of the campaign, a return to form will be an incredible boost to this Red Sox team that has maintained great pitching in his absence. Boston's pitching staff has posted a 3.34 ERA in the last month, the eighth-best in MLB in that span.
