What a difference a day makes for the Boston Red Sox!

After dropping 10 of their last 12, which is as bad as it sounds, the Red Sox came out of the gate screaming in Wednesday night’s game and scored 20 runs for the 18th time in franchise history. It was the first 20+ run game by the Sox since August 2015.

Aside from a horrific ninth inning by Phillips Valdez, who is usually one of the more reliable arms in the bullpen, this game was everything you could ever hope for: incredible pitching by Nathan Eovaldi, bats galore, and a trouncing of your AL East rivals who recently took first place from you.

Do it again, please.

Red Sox vs Rays Odds Today

The Red Sox are -108 on the moneyline (bet $108 to win $100), while the Rays are -102 (bet $102 to win $100). Boston has a slight edge, but this is anyone’s game.

The spread has the Sox at +1.5 at -190 (bet $190 to win $100), while the Rays are -1.5 at +145 (bet $100 to win $145).

If you’re into betting the total amount of runs, the over/under is 10.5 runs today. It’s -125 on the over (bet $125 to win $100) and -105 on the under (bet $105 to win $100).

Red Sox Pitcher Today: Tanner Houck

Yesterday, I said Red Sox needed a solid start from Nathan Eovaldi like they need oxygen to live, and they got one.

Today, they need Tanner Houck to continue being the wunderkind he’s been. They also need to keep him up at the big-league level, but that’s a conversation for another day.

Houck has appeared in seven big-league games for the Sox this season, including five starts. He has a 2.45 ERA over 25 2/3 innings, with 36 strikeouts and only seven walks issued. He’s only allowed two home runs over his entire burgeoning career, one this year and one in 2020. They call him the “righty Chris Sale” for a reason.

Over his last three starts dating back to July 22, Houck has a 1.46 ERA and 21 strikeouts over 12 1/3 innings. His team needs this kind of performance from him today while the lineup tries to out-slug the Rays.

Speak of the devil (rays), Houck is going up against Drew Rasmussen, who has a 4.15 ERA over 27 games. Rays manager Kevin Cash has a bullpen game planned for today, so look for Rasmussen to only go a couple innings. He has a 2.35 ERA over his last seven games, with 15 strikeouts over 15 1/3 innings, and the Rays bullpen is actually effective, unlike most of Boston’s. This won’t be easy.

Red Sox vs Rays Prediction Today

Yesterday, I said I was going to keep picking the Red Sox until they win a game, and they did. I also firmly believe in Tanner Houck, so I’m picking them again.
