The Boston Red Sox are down bad, as the kids say these days.

They’ve lost 10 of their last 12, their starting rotation has an ERA higher than Everest over the last couple weeks, and they look absolutely lifeless lately. It’s pretty unwatchable stuff, and yet we keep watching.

Red Sox Pitcher Today: Nathan Eovaldi

The Red Sox need a solid start from Nathan Eovaldi like they need oxygen to live. This team is drowning. They’ve demoted both Martín Pérez and Garrett Richards to the bullpen, which improves neither the rotation nor the bullpen.

Eovaldi is coming off of his worst start of the year, in which he allowed a season-high seven earned runs to the Toronto Blue Jays over 4 2/3 innings over the weekend. He’s not a big strikeout guy (his career-high is 10), so the four strikeouts wasn’t the concern.

Like pretty much everyone in the rotation, Eovaldi hasn’t been pitching well. He’s allowed five or more earned runs in three of his last five starts, and has a 6.35 ERA over that span. One of those five-run games was against the Rays, though he also pitched a seven-inning one-run gem against them in April.

Eovaldi has now allowed four or more earned runs in eight of his 22 starts this season. In short, the Red Sox desperately need Nate to be less nasty and be more Nasty.
