The Red Sox took batting practice against the Texas Rangers last night, clubbing 17 runs en route to a 17-5 victory.

It started brutally for Ranger’s pitcher, Justin Grimm, who couldn’t even make it through two full innings. The Texas rookie gave up eight earned runs and was chased with two outs in the second, having thrown only 60 pitches.

Up 3-0 in the second, David Ortiz, who already had a double to his name, bludgeoned a ball to right center. But even though he started jogging, resigning himself to what likely would have been a double, Ortiz took notice when the ball escaped from both Leonys Martin and Nelson Cruz. It was then that the hulking designated hitter changed gears and began sprinting for third. Ortiz hit the deck as he came into third, sliding safely for his first triple since April 11, 2011.

Jackie Bradley Jr. hit his first major league home run, and finished the night with 3 RBI. Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Stephen Drew both followed suit with home runs of their own. Mike Carp also hit a home run and drove in three, before being ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the eighth. Even Jose Iglesias got in on the fun, with two hits and two RBI of his own.

Five Rangers pitchers appeared hapless against a potent Sox offense, which scored at least once in every inning through the first seven. Former Sox farm hand, David Murphy, typically the Rangers’ starting left fielder, made his first career pitching appearance. Murphy fared better than the rest of the Texas staff, escaping from a leadoff double by Daniel Nava, and even picking up a strike out along the way.

When all was said and done, the Red Sox had tagged Ranger’s pitching for a season high 19 hits and 17 runs, and snapped a five-game losing streak against Texas.

Meanwhile, Sox starter Ryan Dempster was dealing all night long, his only blemishes were a solo shot given by Nelson Cruz, and two run homer by Jeff Baker. Texas would get two more in the eighth, courtesy of a two run shot off of Clayton Mortensen by Mitch Moreland. The support was more than enough for Dempster to pick up his first win in five starts.
