In anticipation of a free-agent signing of Roy Oswalt or Edwin Jackson, it’s another slow news day surrounding the Red Sox.
The newest addition to the Red Sox, outfielder Cody Ross, officially joined the club yesterday and he tweeted that he will in fact wear the number 7 on his back; the number formerly worn by J.D. Drew.
It’s only fitting that the man brought in to essentially replace Drew in right field takes his number. First he takes his job, then he takes his number. What’s next, is he going to take his house and cars too? Not likely, Drew has too much money for that to happen. Continue reading this post »

The Red Sox needed to add another outfielder with the news that Carl Crawford might not be ready until opening day because of wrist surgery. They addressed that this week when they signed Cody Ross.
The team has another issue and that involves the starting rotation — they only have three pitchers that have proven they can be dependable starting pitchers. Because of that the Red Sox need to address it and sign a starting pitcher.
As it stands right now the Red Sox have Jon Lester, Josh Beckett and Clay Buchholz as their top three starters. The fourth and fifth are the ones that are up in the air. Going into spring training Daniel Bard will be the fourth starter. As for the fifth starter it is a toss up between Alfredo Aceves and the few pitchers the Red Sox have signed to minor league deals this off season. Clearly, this is an issue.

With the 40-man roster full and Cody Ross waiting in the wings, the Red Sox had a decision to make in order to make room for the new outfielder. Either a trade was forthcoming or someone off the roster would be designated for assignment. Today we found out that relief pitcher, Scott Atchison is the player who is the odd man out and was in fact designated for assignment.
Atchison, 35, pitched in 30.1 innings for the Red Sox in 2011, posting an ERA of 3.26, a 5.0 K/9 and a 1.8 BB/9 ratio. Decent numbers for a middle to long relief type of guy. He spent more time in AAA last year where he worked in 61.1 innings. Continue reading this post »

Roy Oswalt. I lack any better opinion then it seems sketchy. Did Boston low ball him with a five million dollar contract? His lower back problems last year had him starting only 23 games (3.69 ERA, nothing to scoff at) after being on the disabled list twice, I thought it was quite generous. If the Phillies decided to decline to pick him up for sixteen million sending him to free agency what is to say he will get a better offer? And after his performance last year, does he really feel comfortable picking and choosing? Oswalt seems to be leaning towards the Cardinals or the Rangers. Why, you might ask? Who would not want to be part of the legendary 100 years at Fenway? Let’s investigate. Continue reading this post »

The Red Sox are making every effort to upgrade their starting rotation as evidenced by the attempt to sign free-agents Roy Oswalt or Edwin Jackson. The teams is still said to be interested in trading for Gavin Floyd, although that is not their first choice. There is a lot happening despite not a lot results, as of yet.
Yesterday we heard that the Red Sox had offered both Oswalt and Jackson a contract offer. While terms were not disclosed, Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston says the clubs first choice is Oswalt, contrary to belief that it was Jackson. Oswalt has yet to accept the Sox offer and is questioning if he wants to play in Boston. Multiple reports state that Oswalt would prefer to play in either St. Louis or Texas. Here’s the latest on the pitching situation. Continue reading this post »

It just sounds crazy doesn’t it? To even think that the Detroit Tigers helped out the Red Sox by signing Prince Fielder to an enormous contract is ludicrous, but it’s true.
Our friends at Over the Monster do a great job of breaking this scenario down. To recap, the Sox could benefit from the Tigers signing Prince because of what this might force the Chicago White Sox to do. With the Tigers the runaway favorite to now win the AL Central for the next multiple years, the Chi Sox could be forced to rebuild rather than try a concerted effort of reloading with middle tier free-agents and a mix of rebuilding (basically running in circles hoping to find the right path). With the writing on the wall for the South Chicago club, Gavin Floyd may suddenly become a little cheaper and who needs a quality starting pitcher? The Red Sox do. Continue reading this post »

Jacoby Ellsbury is set to have another rock star type year. At least that’s according to you the reader as the latest poll results are in. We asked if you thought Ellsbury would surpass the Bill James projected numbers and in overwhelming fashion, 76% of the 78 votes cast felt that he would.
As a recap here are the James’ numbers on Ellsbury. An offensive line of .304/.362/.476 with 19 homers, 72 RBI and 38 stolen bases. Like I said before, his line is low to me. This guy can flat out hit and I don’t believe last year was a one-hit wonder. The lowered projection on the long-balls makes sense but you have to believe he’ll bring in more than 72 RBI. Also, if he hits lead off again, I fully expect Bobby V to take advantage of his speed and swipe more than 38 bags.
Thanks for voting.

Is it panic? Or is it self realization that the Red Sox need to explore the real possibility of signing either Roy Oswalt or Edwin Jackson to improve their starting rotation. Either way, the Red Sox, namely Ben Cherington has been busy today and after we heard an offer to Roy Oswalt was made, we now learn that an offer has been presented for free-agent Edwin Jackson.
Jim Bowden of ESPN via Twitter broke the news and he says the Red Sox prefer Jackson to Oswalt, providing the years and financials make sense for the team. Bowden reports that the Red Sox and the Jackson party are currently in talks. Continue reading this post »
