Boston Red Sox left-hander Payton Tolle was pitching with a heavy heart on Mother's Day. Tolle's Sunday start against the Tampa Bay Rays came exactly one day after the second anniversary of his mother's passing.
Anyone familiar with Tolle's story wasn't surprised to see Tolle celebrating with boundless emotion when he struck out Rays slugger Junior Caminero in the top of the fifth inning at Fenway Park. It was obvious that Tolle was overcome with the feels during this moment, and there was nothing wrong or remotely inappropriate about it, even with the Red Sox trailing the game, 3-0, at the time.
But for people unfamiliar with Tolle's story, the reaction from the hurler in a losing game may have seemed odd. The well-known Jomboy Media X account shared a video of Tolle's reaction with the caption: "Junior Caminero was confused why Payton Tolle was celebrating a strikeout this much in a game the Red Sox were losing 3-0."

Jomboy's post wasn't inaccurate, just misinformed. It's true that both Caminero and Jomboy were perplexed as to why Tolle was celebrating. Caminero may have been a bit miffed, in fact, considering he had homered off of Tolle in the first inning of the same game.
Of course, neither Caminero nor Jomboy knew why Tolle was so emotional, and that led to both parties (mostly Jomboy) getting blasted on social media for alleged insensitivity to Tolle's situation.
"You guys are scummy for not clearing this up," one user wrote of Jomboy. "Do better. Pathetic company."
"Would be pretty cool if a company that’s partnered with MLB actually did any amount of research," another user chimed in.
Jomboy should be forgiven for Payton Tolle oversight
Jomboy's Tolle post racked up nearly five million views, mostly due to fans quoting the post and blasting Jomboy's lack of awareness. It wasn't an amazing look for Jomboy, but on the other hand, can we really get that upset about them not being fully up to speed with Tolle's life story? It's a heartwarming/sad narrative that is way more important than baseball, but it's also a narrative that is mostly known to Red Sox fans alone. This was an oversight from Jomboy, but certainly not an unforgivable one.
Tolle, meanwhile, continues to prove that he's not only a high-quality pitcher but a high-quality human being. His stuff is electric, but Tolle's character and inner power are the reasons why he'll ultimately be a franchise cornerstone for Boston. You have to look way beyond velocity or stats to understand Tolle's greatness.
Red Sox fans have been hoping that Boston makes Tolle a permanent member of the rotation, and he's definitely done enough to warrant that move. He's a huge part of this organization's present and future.
