The Boston Red Sox will be without star rookie Marcelo Mayer for the rest of the 2025 season. The Red Sox revealed on Sunday that Mayer will undergo season-ending wrist surgery. The recovery time for this injury is expected to be around three months, and Boston hopes to have Mayer back on the field when the team reports to spring training in 2026.
This is an unfortunate end to what was an up-and-down rookie season for Mayer. The former first-round draft pick came up with high expectations, and while he showed some promise, it's safe to say that his first crack in the big leagues was somewhat of a disappointment. Mayer's first season will come to close after hitting just .228/.272/.402 with four home runs and 10 RBI.
The Red Sox now have to face the reality of what the rest of the season looks like with Mayer in the lineup. Thankfully, both Alex Bregman and Trevor Story are having above-average seasons for Boston, and in Bregman's case, an MVP-level season.
What’s next for Red Sox after team confirms worst Marcelo Mayer injury fears
Bregman is hitting .303/.385/.544 and is more than living up to the lofty contract he signed with Boston during the offseason. The former Houston Astros third baseman has been arguably the Red Sox best player, and has Boston firmly entrenched in the AL Wild Card chase.
Story's production in 2025 is somewhat unexpected. After three disappointing (and injury-riddled) seasons in Beantown, Story has shown glimpses of the All-Star caliber player he used to be with the Colorado Rockies. He has given manager Alex Cora a solid contributor alongside Bregman on the left side of the infield.
With Mayer on the shelf, one has to wonder if Kristian Campbell will get another shot this season. Currently at Triple-A Worcester, Campbell has posted a disappointing .223/.319/.345 slash line this season. But during the month of August, Campbell has hit .294 with an .841 OPS at Triple-A and could be nearing a return to the big leagues very soon.
Mayer's injury designation is disheartening, but the Red Sox should be able to weather the storm for the remainder of the season. Next spring, however, there will be numerous questions to answer, not the least of which is what will Boston do with all this young talent?
