Trevor Story has drawn the ire of Boston Red Sox fans multiple times in his Red Sox tenure, especially over the last two seasons. Between injuries and extended slumps, fans have turned against Story many times, but each time he has come back and proved them wrong.
In 2025, Story, finally healthy, started the season ice cold. On June 6th, 2025, Story was hitting .214 with a .582 OPS. Many in Red Sox Nation were calling for Story's head, wanting the club to designate him for assignment.
Then, he figured it out. From June 7 until the end of the season, the righty hit .297 with an .834 OPS. He had 43 extra-base hits and 70 RBI in 96 games.
Even with extended success, fans were still calling for him to be benched during a small slump in August, but he again rebounded in September, hitting over .300 in the final month. Story then was one of the few hitters to show up in the playoffs, leading the team in hits and RBIs, and having the Sox's only homer of the Wild Card Series.

Even with how well he played in the second half of the season and his success in the playoffs, fans were still unsure about him during the offseason. He did nothing to help himself in the first half of the 2026 season. Before Story was officially shut down with his sports hernia, he was hitting .206 with a .547 OPS. He had just ten extra-base hits and eight walks in 41 games.
Once again, injuries and prolonged slumps had fans turning against Story. He became almost out-of-sight out-of-mind during the Red Sox turnaround, but eventually reports about him getting healthy and going on rehab assignments had some in Red Sox Nation once again pushing against his return. Many fans didn't want to force the shortstop back into the lineup after his performance, but once again he's proved them wrong.
In 16 games since his return from the IL, Story is hitting .349 with an .867 OPS. He came back and immediately went on a seven-game hit streak. He's hit seven doubles, and his first home run since his return was a three-run shot that gave the Sox a 4-3 lead against the Rangers. After being worth -0.3 fWAR in his first 41 games, Story has accumulated 0.6 fWAR since coming back.
Story put everything together at the right time again. With the playoffs less than two weeks away, nobody is questioning whether the 33-year-old should be playing every day or on the playoff roster.
