The Boston Red Sox announced on Saturday morning that Nick Sogard would be coming up from Triple-A to join them down south for their evening matchup with the Atlanta Braves (first reported by Tommy Cassell). About an hour after that news, the corresponding move dropped.

Trevor Story has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a "groin issue," according to multiple sources. The veteran shortstop has reportedly been dealing with the injury since late April during Boston's series in Baltimore (Alex Cora was also fired during that series).

Story didn't play in Boston's May 15 series opener in Atlanta and interim manager Chad Tracy noted that the team was monitoring a groin issue Story had been dealing with for some time. He's certainly played like he's been going through something.

Story has batted .206/.244/.303 with 57 strikeouts and eight walks through 41 games. He's hit seven doubles, three home runs and logged 18 RBI. Story's defense has left plenty to be desired so far this season — he leads the Red Sox with six errors and and three outs below average for a 10th percentile range among shortstops.

Tracy is already relying on a Triple-A favorite to give the offense a lift, and hopefully Sogard can do the same. Mickey Gasper has been in the big leagues since May 7 and he's been one of the hottest hitters on the team since then, with seven hits, including two doubles, and two RBI over five games.

Sogard is slashing .269/.417/.454 with nine doubles and five home runs over 36 games. He's had a particularly excellent eye at the plate this season, as evidenced by his on-base percentage and his rate of 29 strikeouts to 35 walks. Given Boston's offensive struggles, it could use someone who's getting on base as consistently as Sogard has this season.

The utility infielder has come up to help the Red Sox in a pinch before and he's often delivered. He's batting .266/.321/.335 over 61 games in the big leagues, between a few stints in 2024-25.

Boston's evening lineup hasn't yet been released, so it's uncertain where Sogard will play. He's played all across the infield this season, and even three games in the outfield with Worcester, but he's spent the most time between first base and shortstop. He could take up Story's place at shortstop or Marcelo Mayer could play there, pushing Sogard to second base.

It was clear by his play that Story desperately needed a rest, or some time to sort out his struggles. If he can return to his 2025 self who consistently delivered offensively in the second half and knocked 25 homers, it'll go a long way toward helping the Red Sox crawl into contention in the underwhelming American League.
