The Boston Red Sox Double-A affiliate, the Portland Sea Dogs, made history on April 26 in their 3-2 win over the Hartford Yard Goats. For the ninth time in franchise history, they threw a no-hitter that shouldn't be overshadowed by the biggest Red Sox news of the week.
Three pitchers combined for the effort. Hayden Mullins, Boston's No. 15 prospect, was the starter. He was relieved by Caleb Bolden. Finally, Reidis Sena closed out the game. Nate Baez was the catcher, which should always be highlighted.
Mullins started and went the first five innings. The left-handed pitcher allowed two unearned runs on no hits over five innings. He struck out five batters but walked five. Mullins has had issues with walks popping up at times throughout his career, but he is always effective. Sunday was no different.
When Mullins left the game, the Sea Dogs were down 2-0. Following Mullins, Bolden went the next two innings. The right-handed reliever didn’t allow a hit or a walk over those two scoreless innings. He struck out three batters. Bolden got hit around in each of his two previous outings, but was spectacular against Hartford.
Portland pitching trio combine for ninth no-hitter in franchise history
Portland had tied the game up 2-2 by the time Bolden left the game. Baez wasn’t just helping the pitching — he got the Sea Dogs on the board with a two-run home run.
Sena had the final two innings. The right-handed pitcher also didn’t allow a hit or a walk over his two shutout innings. He struck out four batters. Sena was making his season debut with Portland, as he was previously in Triple-A with Worcester.
The final out was a flyout to left fielder Will Turner.
Between Sena’s innings, Portland took a 3-2 lead thanks to a Ronald Rosario RBI-single. He drove home Brooks Brannon (who walked and stole second). Basically, the team’s catchers worked together offensively to help the pitchers complete their no-hitter.
Portland is no stranger to no-hitters. As mentioned at the start of the article, they’ve thrown nine in franchise history. The last one came not even a year ago. On June 22, 2025, David Sandlin, Christopher Troye, and Johnathan Brand combined for the feat. Funny enough, Ronald Rosario was the catcher in that game and drove in a run. He might not have caught this time around, but he was still impacting the game with an RBI.
Portland is 11-9 to start the 2026 season. It’s hard to imagine any game grabbing the headlines like this one, though. No matter how their careers pan out and what directions their paths take them, Hayden Mullins, Caleb Bolden, Reidis Sena, and Nate Baez are now connected in a moment of immortality.
