The Boston Red Sox were reportedly in the mix for Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez before the All-Star was shipped back to the Seattle Mariners late last night. According to The Athletic (subscription required), the Red Sox attempted to land Suárez and were planning to play him at first base.
Suárez has spent most of his career at the hot corner, though his early years in the minors were spent at shortstop. As he's now heading into the latter part of his Major League career, however, a move to first base seems to be on the horizon for the two-time All-Star.
While Boston struck out on Suárez, the notion that the Red Sox were looking to move him to first base should give the fanbase a lot of clues as to the front office's intentions as the trade deadline nears. The Red Sox are targeting a first baseman with some pop.
Red Sox Rumors: Boston's interest in Eugenio Suárez hints at bold and creative trade deadline
These latest Red Sox rumors seem to indicate that one of Ryan O'Hearn or Yandy Diaz could be on Boston's short list. Oddly enough, both players currently reside in the AL East, which could make these types of deals rather tricky.
The Orioles are obvious sellers, though matching up with a division rival on a trade can be difficult. After a horrid season in Baltimore, Orioles GM Mike Elias is looking to gain whatever he can at the deadline to help build up his team for next season. O'Hearn represents one of the best bats available at the deadline, though he's cooled off of late.
Diaz would look great in a Red Sox uniform, and his team-friendly deal would certainly bring a smile to John Henry's face. However, the Rays are in this buy-and-sell mode ahead the deadline, and given Diaz's affordable contract, Tampa Bay might be hesitant to part company with their slugging first baseman.
It remains to be seen which players Craig Breslow and the Red Sox front target before the deadline passes at 6 p.m. ET. But the team's interest in Suárez no doubt signals Boston's intent to grab a big bat. Now it all comes down to who's available and what it's going to cost.
