The Boston Red Sox's No. 1 prospect, Roman Anthony, got a chance to bond with the veterans on the squad at the second annual “Story Camp” hosted by Red Sox infielder Trevor Story.
Anthony, who spent 2024 splitting his time between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, hit a .291 average to go along with 18 home runs and 65 RBI. The 20-year-old prospect is the No. 3 overall prospect in the minors, according to MLB.com's top 100 prospect list.
For a guy who hopes to join the big league squad in 2025, Story Camp is a huge opportunity to get face time in with the team's current stars. Triston Casas, Rob Refsnyder, and Vaughn Grissom joined Anthony and Story in Dallas.
For each guy, it’ll be an opportunity to learn and grow. The workouts at Story Camp include lifting, baserunning, hitting and fielding drills. Last year's event was framed as an infielding camp, but Anthony and Refsnyder joining in has brought the party to the outfield, as well.
Story, a 32-year-old veteran, decided to put together the camp as a way to pay forward some of the opportunities he had as a minor leaguer. Story attended a similar program with Colorado when he went to Las Vegas in the off-season to work with veteran Troy Tulowitzki. Story said that when given the chance to be a leader in Boston, he wanted to bring a similar experience to the young guys.
"It was something I was kind of coming into my last couple of years there in Denver,” Story said to NESN. “It was something I wanted to embrace. I think you have to if you want to be good at it. I had a lot of great leaders that kind of showed me their way and I’ve taken different pieces of their style and kind of made it my own.”
Anthony quickly followed his trip to Story Camp with some time at the Red Sox rookie development program. Hopefully, all the work he's put in to make the Opening Day roster pays off.
