Late at night on their August 27 off day, the Boston Red Sox made a sneaky move to add some depth to their Triple-A roster. The move could also signal a more upsetting decision to come later.
Boston has signed catcher Tomás Nido to a minor league deal, first reported by Nick John of Talk Sox. The deal was later confirmed by Chris Cotillo of MassLive. Nido joins fellow catchers Nate Baez, Nathan Hickey, Jason Delay and Juan Montero out in Worcester, adding to an already extensive list of depth options that also includes Mickey Gasper. Anthony Seigler also came up through the minor leagues as a catcher.
Nido's signing with the Red Sox comes at a suspicious time. Boston acquired former division rival backstop Adley Rutschman at the trade deadline, but he recently hyperextended his elbow on an aggressive swing, which caused him to miss two games before a team off day.
The Red Sox have said Rutschman's injury is nothing to worry about, but fans aren't so sure. No team is perfect at predicting injuries and timelines, but the Red Sox have been especially bad at evaluating their injured players this year — some fans might remeber they didn't initially believe Roman Anthony or Garrett Crochet would need injured list stints for the issues they've spent over six combined months on the IL with.
Adley Rutschman's elbow issue could've forced Red Sox's hand with Tomás Nido signing
Rutschman was on the IL when he arrived in Boston from the Baltimore Orioles, and it was his third IL stint of the year. Adding another one to the mix would be unfortunate, especially during a playoff chase. The Red Sox also gave up five players, including three top-five prospects to bring Rutschman in, and he hasn't delivered so far. There's no guarantee he'll hit the IL, and he's even said his elbow has been feeling better, but Sox fans would rather not get their hopes up.
Nido has appeared in parts of nine major league seasons, mostly for the New York Mets, but he's also played for the Chicago Cubs and, most recently, the Detroit Tigers. Nido logged 12 hits, two RBI and 10 strikeouts over 10 games (.343/.361/.343 slash line) in 2025. He remained in the Tigers organization this season and batted .236/.317/.368 over 43 games for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens.
Hopefully, the Red Sox are merely stocking up on catching depth for the postseason push and have no plans of putting Rutschman on the IL. Nido is a solid depth addition with major league experience who could be called up at any time.
