If you are a Boston Red Sox fan who shares Jonathan Papelbon's apparent disdain for Friday Night Baseball on Apple TV+, you're in luck! You will be spared the experience of watching Friday's series opener against the Cleveland Guardians on the over-the-top streaming service.
Unfortunately, though, that is because there will no longer be a game on Friday night at all.Christopher Smith of MassLive posted on X approximately two hours before scheduled first pitch that the game would likely be postponed "soon" due to rainy conditions in Cleveland, and the official postponement announcement came not long after.
Instead, the teams are now scheduled to play a doubleheader at Progressive Field. Friday’s game has been rescheduled to 1:10 p.m. ET Saturday, with the second game set to begin at 6:10 p.m. Both games will now be broadcast on NESN, as will Sunday's series finale.
Red Sox vs Guardians Weather: Friday’s game officially postponed, more details
Right-hander Tanner Houck was scheduled to take the mound for Boston opposite Cleveland righty Ben Lively in Friday's game. Pitching probables for Saturday's early game have not yet been announced for either team.
Walker Buehler, coming off an exceptional start in which he threw seven innings of one-run ball against the Chicago White Sox, is scheduled to start for Boston on Saturday evening opposite Guardians right-hander Logan Allen. Brayan Bello is set to take the hill Sunday for his second start since returning from injury against Cleveland's Gavin Williams.
The Red Sox will have to hope that Friday's postponement doesn't cool down the bats of first baseman Triston Casas, who mashed a three-run homer in each of his last two games, or Jaren Durran, who extended his hitting streak to 10 games in Wednesday's loss to the Seattle Mariners.
The Red Sox enter the series with a 14-13 record, and the Guardians are 14-10. Both teams sit in second place in their respective divisions and are 6-4 in their last 10 games. The Red Sox are second in the American League in runs scored (124), while Cleveland has just 101.
