The Boston Red Sox have had it pretty good lately after going 18-3 in July and throwing themselves into a position to buy ahead of the trade deadline. But their early trade acquisition didn't even make it out of his first Sox game unscathed.
Former Washington Nationals third baseman Curtis Mead left the Red Sox's July 27 game against the Athletics in the fourth inning after he was hit by a pitch on the wrist. Boston was initially hopeful that he would be able to avoid the injured list, but a surprise roster move has raised doubts about Mead's health.
Nick Sogard has been called up to join the Red Sox in Sacramento, according to Tommy Cassell of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. Alex Speier of The Boston Globe confirmed that the Sox have placed Mead on the IL (subscription required). There's no easy way to get Sogard from Worcester to Sacramento before the game, so he'll most likely join the team on Wednesday, leaving Boston a man short for game two against the A's.
After his initial report, Cassell said that a team source shared that Mead has a broken wrist. This isn't the first time that the Red Sox have been severely mistaken about the nature of a player's injury — remember when Roman Anthony and Garrett Crochet weren't supposed to need IL stints?

Mead's injury is brutal luck for the Sox. They traded for him ahead of the deadline to bring more home run power to their infield, but they'll lose him for anywhere from a week to 15 days, at the very least. Mead underwent x-rays on his hit wrist at Sutter Health Park, which came back clean. According to Speier, "further evaluation" forced the Red Sox to place Mead on the IL.
Before the hit by pitch to Mead out of Monday's game, Red Sox fans didn't even get to see him deliver at the plate. He fanned looking in his first inning at-bat. Mead batted .254/.352/.500 with 17 doubles, a triple and 17 home runs over 87 games with the Nationals.
Sogard has already had a stint in the major leagues this season, which was shortened by an oblique injury. The Red Sox optioned him back to Triple-A on July 12 and he's back sooner than Boston would've liked. Sogard is batting .257/.350/.371 in 12 big league appearances this year. Historically, Sogard has played well for the major league squad and he's delivered in many clutch situations.
