According to reports from FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray and others, the Boston Red Sox are trading left-handed pitcher Zach Penrod to the Los Angeles Dodgers for cash considerations.
The Red Sox designated Penrod for assignment on Sunday after trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in order to clear roster space for Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison, whom they acquired in the trade. Had Penrod cleared waivers, he would have remained in the Red Sox organization with an outright assignment to Triple-A Worcester.
Penrod, who missed the start of the season with a left elbow sprain, was activated off the injured list and optioned to Worcester in late May. Prior to his DFA, the southpaw posted a 5.68 ERA and 2.05 WHIP with seven strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings in six appearances with Worcester this season.
Red Sox trade recently DFA'd pitcher Zach Penrod to Dodgers for cash
Penrod's brief taste of major league action came in 2024, when he pitched to a 2.25 ERA and a 1.75 WHIP with three strikeouts in four innings over seven games with the Red Sox in late September after starting the season with Double-A Portland.
Penrod, who signed with the Texas Rangers in 2018 as an undrafted free agent, has been in the Red Sox organization since he signed a minor league contract with the club in August 2023. He was in the mix for a big league bullpen spot on the Red Sox's 2025 Opening Day roster before suffering his elbow injury early in spring training.
The 28-year-old Penrod will now get a fresh start with a Dodgers team that desperate for pitching depth as they look to maintain their hold on the top spot in the National League West. The Dodgers have signed a slew of arms this season in an effort to bolster their injury-depleted pitching staff and currently have 34 pitchers on their 40-man roster as they seek to defend their World Series title.
Red Sox reinstate Wilyer Abreu from IL after optioning Kristian Campbell to Triple-A
In other Red Sox roster news, Boston reinstated outfielder Wilyer Abreu from the 10-day injured list on Friday. The club optioned infielder Kristian Campbell to Triple-A Worcester Thursday in a corresponding move.
Abreu, who has been on the IL since June 9 with a left oblique strain, has hit .245 (51-for-208) with 13 home runs and 32 RBI with the Red Sox this season. His 13 homers are already approaching his career high of 15 (set in 2024), and he will be a welcome addition to a Red Sox lineup that recently lost its greatest offensive weapon in Devers.
Speaking of which, the Red Sox find themselves near the bottom of the American League East as they prepare for an awkward reunion with Devers in San Francisco this weekend. In three games so far with the Giants, Devers is hitting .273 with an OPS of .749.
