When Ranger Suarez left prematurely left his May 3 start against the Houston Astros, his team's rotation was already in a bad way. Sonny Gray and Garrett Crochet were on the injured list along with three of the best depth options behind them, Kutter Crawford, Patrick Sandoval and Tyler Uberstine.
Suarez's hamstring tightened up on him after he pitched four scoreless, three-hit innings against Houston. The Red Sox after the game said they hoped to avoid an IL stint for Suarez as they considered his injury minor.
They were right. Interim Red Sox manager Chad Tracy announced that Suarez will make his next start in Boston's upcoming series against the Philadelphia Phillies, Suarez's longtime former team. Tracy didn't specify which day Suarez would start, however — anywhere between May 12-14 is fair game.
Ranger Suarez to return to Red Sox rotation from hamstring injury during May 12-14 Phillies series
Suarez has spent almost his entire professional career with the Phillies. They signed him as an international free agent out of Venezuela in 2012 and he played out his entire rookie contract in Philadelphia before hitting free agency for the first time in the 2025-26 offseason. He posted a 3.38 ERA over his eight seasons in Philly, which he began as a relief pitcher.
Suarez has been one of the Red Sox's most consistent pitchers this year, to the tune of a 2.77 ERA, a 0.949 WHIP, 32 strikeouts and 10 walks in 39 innings. The veteran lefty has made two of the longest outings of the year among Boston's starters, going eight innings on April 17 and 27 against the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays, respectively.
Red Sox reinstate Justin Slaten from over a month on the IL with an oblique strain
Before their May 9 game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Red Sox activated reliever Justin Slaten from the IL. The lefty had been on the shelf since April 8 with an oblique strain, and through a setback, he's ready to return. Boston optioned reliever Jack Anderson back to Triple-A as the corresponding move.
Slaten made two minor league rehab appearances, one in Double-A and one in Triple-A, before his activation. He didn't let up a run on two hits and a walk with four strikeouts over two innings. He hadn't allowed a run over 3.1 innings across four appearances in the big leagues before his injury. He logged five strikeouts and two walks.
