After an extra-inning victory over the Chicago White Sox that took over four hours, and 13 innings to complete, it was only natural the Boston Red Sox were going to make a move to bring in a fresh arm ahead of their series against the Athletics, who just fired their general manager, this weekend.
The Red Sox have optioned veteran relief pitcher Greg Weissert to Triple-A Worcester, selecting the contract of left-handed pitcher Raymond Burgos to take his place on the roster.

The Red Sox used nine different pitchers in last night's victory. Life would have been difficult for Chad Tracy had they not opted to bring up a fresh arm for the weekend.
Weissert had an inning of work against the White Sox on Thursday night, giving up one run while striking out three. As is the case with under two months remaining in the regular season, now is the time that most contending teams play gymnastics with their pitching staff.
Weissert is one of the few relief pitchers the Red Sox have in their bullpen with minor-league options remaioning, and having thrown 34 pitches yesterday, he was certainly going to be unavailable tonight and most likely on Saturday as well. Considering he sports a 3.97 ERA while striking out 23% of the hitters he's faced this season, chances are Weissert will be back up as soon as possible. Barring an injury, Weissert can't be recalled for the next ten days.
Burgos was a 2016 draft pick of the Cleveland Guardians, and was with the organization until he moved to the San Francisco Giants in 2023. Joining the Red Sox organization this past offseason, he's largely been used a starting pitcher this season with Triple-A Worcester. In 64 innings pitched, he carried a 5.63 ERA before the promotion, striking out under 18% of the hitters he faced.
The goal for the Red Sox tonight, of course, is that they get some length out of Peyton Tolle. If not, Burgos almost certainly will be used as bulk arm while the bullpen looks to catch their breath after the all-nighter against the White Sox.
