Amid their long search for a righty power bat, the Boston Red Sox have signed multiple catchers to add depth after the trade of top catching prospect Kyle Teel to the Chicago White Sox.

On Jan. 23, the Sox re-signed a former catcher to further increase their options behind the plate. Boston re-signed Mark Kolozsvary to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, per Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.

Kolozsvary spent the 2024 campaign with the WooSox and slashed .185/.349/.354. He's appeared in 11 big league games in his career, 10 in 2022 and one in 2023. He batted .200/.238/.450 with a homer over his 10 games with the Reds.

Kolozsvary's offensive production isn't significant enough to be the Sox's final right-handed addition this offseason, but his defense is an upgrade from Reese McGuire and Danny Jansen as one of Boston's backup options. Kolozsvary posted a .983 fielding percentage over 164.2 innings behind the plate last season and caught six runners stealing.

Kolozsvary will join recently-acquired Blake Sabol, Carlos Narváez, and Seby Zavala as the Red Sox's offseason catching additions for 2025. Of the four, Zavala has the most big league experience, but Sabol has the best slash line from his time in the majors (.243/.313/.392.) However, the former Giant hits lefty, and the Red Sox already have a surplus of lefty hitters. Sabol and Narváez have been added to the Red Sox's 40-man roster.

Kolozsvary's lackluster offense will likely keep him in Triple-A to start the season, but he'll be a solid defensive option if something goes awry with Boston's catching situation. None of the team's recent backstop signings will dethrone Connor Wong from the starting job.
