The Boston Red Sox prospect watch is carried by some of the hottest bats in all of minor league baseball right now, as well as a few underrated arms in the lower levels of the system.
Boston's farm system had an electric week, from standout performances by recent signings to top prospects earning Player of the Week honors. Luckily, we have time to cover it all.
Red Sox Prospect Update: Johanfran Garcia and Miguel Bleis explode at the plate, Jacob Mayers
Worcester Red Sox (Triple-A)
Angel Bastardo had another big week. The right-handed pitcher tossed two scoreless innings in his lone outing. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out four batters. Bastardo has a 5.14 ERA, .234 BAA, and 1.67 WHIP in 13 outings. He has 30 strikeouts and 17 walks in 21 innings.
Mikey Romero went just 4-for-17, but did hit another home run. The left-handed hitting infielder is slashing .227/.286/.347 with 10 doubles, two triples, and four home runs. He’s driven in 25 runs, scored 24, and stolen one base.
Portland Sea Dogs (Double-A)
Johanfran Garcia had one of the better weeks you’ll see. He’s also currently rocking a 10-game hitting streak. The right-handed-hitting catcher went 14-for-27 with four doubles and two home runs. He drove in 10 runs in six games. Garcia is slashing .309/.356/.570 with six doubles and 11 home runs in Double-A this season. He’s driven in 31 runs, scored 22, and stolen one base. It might be time for the 21-year-old to get the bump to Triple-A.
Franklin Arias had a typically big Franklin Arias week. The right-handed-hitting shortstop went 7-for-18 with three walks, two doubles, and one RBI in five games. Arias is slashing .318/.397/.579 with 10 doubles, one triple, and 13 home runs. He’s driven in 35 runs, scored 34, and stolen four bases.
Miguel Bleis had one of his best professional games this week, racking up four hits, including two doubles and a homer. The right-handed hitter is slashing .218/.289/.329 with seven doubles and four home runs this season. He’s driven in 18 runs, scored 26, and stolen seven bases.
Stanley Tucker was surprisingly bumped up to Double-A all the way from Single-A on Sunday. The right-handed hitting utility player went 1-for-3 with a walk and a home run in his debut with Portland.
John Holobetz had his best start in a few weeks. The right-handed pitcher allowed three hits over six shutout innings. He struck out six batters and walked one. Holobetz boasts a 4.70 ERA, .240 BAA, and 1.30 WHIP in 11 games (10 starts). He has 55 strikeouts and 19 walks in 51 2/3 innings.
Greenville Drive (High-A)
Enddy Azocar went 9-for-21 with two doubles, a home run, and two steals this week. The right-handed-hitting outfielder is hitting .344 since being promoted to High-A and holds a .308/.355/.542 slash line with 19 doubles, five triples, and eight home runs between Single-A and High-A this season. He’s driven in 36 runs, scored 44, and stolen 10 bases.
Tyler Davis made his organizational debut this week after being signed recently, and boy, did he impress. The left-handed pitcher allowed one run on four hits over 4 2/3 innings in his two appearances. He struck out five batters without walking any. Davis even picked up a win.
Steven Brooks allowed one hit over 2 2/3 scoreless innings and picked up a save between two appearances. He struck out five batters without walking any. The right-handed pitcher has a 3.26 ERA, .198 BAA, and 1.42 WHIP in 17 appearances. He has 47 strikeouts and 22 walks in 30 1/3 innings.
Jojo Ingrassia gave up one hit over three shutout innings in his lone start this week. The left-handed pitcher struck out four batters and walked one. Ingrassia has a 1.31 ERA, .155 BAA, and 1.02 WHIP in seven games (five starts). He has 28 strikeouts and 10 walks in 20 2/3 innings.
Salem RidgeYaks (Single-A)
Jacob Mayers was an absolute strikeout machine this week. The right-handed pitcher surrendered one run on two hits over 3 2/3 innings in his only outing. He walked one batter and struck out a ridiculous nine opponents. Mayers holds a 2.51 ERA, .151 BAA, and 1.27 WHIP in 10 appearances (five starts). He has 46 strikeouts compared to 25 walks in 32 1/3 innings.
Givian Sirviano went 3-for-8 with a walk, a double, and a steal. The right-handed hitting utility player is slashing .316/.409/.368 with two doubles since being promoted to Single-A. He’s driven in five runs, scored four, and is a perfect 8-for-8 on stolen base attempts.
Avinson Pinto had a big week at the plate, going 6-for-18 with a double and three RBI. He even walked more times (3) than he struck out (2). Pinto is slashing .224/.325/.382 with eight doubles, five triples, and three home runs. He’s driven in 20 runs, scored 28, and stolen five bases.
