There’s a weird air surrounding the Boston Red Sox Prospect Update this week. The trade deadline was on Monday and a few prospects on this list are no longer in the organization.
It’s strange to write about everyone in an article like this and act like it’s all just status quo when you know basically every name has been brought up in trade conversations as the Red Sox seem to be extremely serious about making a playoff push.
Red Sox Prospect Update: Jake Schaffner, Owen Hull debuts, John Holobetz and Gage Ziehl deal
Worcester Red Sox (Triple-A)
Franklin Arias had himself a week. The right-handed-hitting shortstop went 7-for-22 with two doubles and two home runs. He drove in six runs and scored two. Arias walked as many times (4) as he struck out (4) and even appeared at second base multiple times. It didn’t take long for the 20-year-old to get acclimated to Triple-A.
John Holobetz made his Triple-A debut on Thursday. The right-handed pitcher allowed one run on four hits over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out six batters without walking any. Holobetz picked up the win in his debut.
Blake Wehunt allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits over five innings this week. The right-handed pitcher struck out four batters and walked two. Wehunt looked fine in his Worcester debut the week prior, but took a fantastic step forward this week. He also earned his first Triple-A win here.
Angel Bastardo’s incredible run continued. The right-handed pitcher allowed one hit in 2 2/3 scoreless innings over two appearances. He struck out six batters without walking any. Bastardo has made five straight scoreless outings, racking up 16 strikeouts and zero walks over eight innings. He is down to a 4.31 ERA, .203 BAA, and 1.24 WHIP in 26 appearances. Bastardo has 57 strikeouts and 20 walks in 39 2/3 innings.
Portland Sea Dogs (Double-A)
Anthony Eyanson allowed two runs on four hits over 4 2/3 innings. The right-handed pitcher walked two batters and struck out a career-high 10. Eyanson has a 1.32 ERA, .152 BAA, and 0.89 WHIP in 16 games (15 starts) between High-A and Double-A. He has 94 strikeouts and 26 walks in 68 1/3 innings. Eyanson was traded to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for Adley Rutschman.
Gage Ziehl surrendered one run on six hits over six innings on Sunday. The right-handed pitcher struck out eight batters and walked one. Ziehl is down to a 4.33 ERA, .278 BAA, and 1.35 WHIP in 17 starts. He has 96 strikeouts and 18 walks in 81 innings.
Ahbram Liendo went 7-for-15 with a double and a home run. The right-handed-hitting infielder drove in four runs and scored four more. He also had a walk-off single. Liendo is slashing .237/.329/.369 with 10 doubles, two triples, and six home runs. He’s driven in 45 runs, scored 40, and stolen 18 bases.
Yoeilin Cespedes made his Double-A debut on Sunday. The right-handed-hitting middle infielder went 1-for-5. He struck out four times but did drive in two runs.
Greenville Drive (High-A)
Jake Schaffner made his organizational debut on Saturday. The left-handed-hitting shortstop went 3-for-8 with a double and a triple. He drove in four runs, scored four runs, and stole a base. Schaffner walked more times (2) than he struck out (1).
Owen Hull also made his organizational debut on Saturday. The left-handed-hitting outfielder went 5-for-10 with two doubles. He drove in four runs and scored two.
Enddy Azocar did what this week? The right-handed-hitting outfielder went 14-for-25 with three doubles and three home runs. He drove in 10 runs and scored 10. Azocar is slashing .286/.341/.540 with 27 doubles, six triples, and 18 home runs between Single-A and High-A. He’s driven in 63 runs, scored 76, and stolen 11 bases. Azocar was also included in Boston's trade for Rutschman.
Maximus Martin went 6-for-16 with a double and two home runs. He drove in 10 runs and scored three. The right-handed-hitting utility holds a .171/.211/.371 slash line with one double and two home runs in nine games in High-A this season. He has 10 RBI and four runs scored.
Nazzan Zanetello came off the IL and went 6-for-10 with two doubles and a home run. The right-handed-hitting utility drove in three runs, scored four, and stole one base.
Devin Futrell surrendered three hits over six shutout innings on Friday. The left-handed pitcher struck out eight batters and walked three. Futrell has a 3.76 ERA, .233 BAA, and 1.08 WHIP in 17 games (13 starts). He has 95 strikeouts and 16 walks in 83 2/3 innings.
Dylan Brown allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits over 6 1/3 innings in his start this week. The left-handed pitcher struck out nine batters and walked one. Brown has a 3.43 ERA, .235 BAA, and 1.27 WHIP in 17 games (16 starts) between Single-A and High-A. He has 113 strikeouts and 34 walks in 84 innings.
Kyson Witherspoon allowed one run on four hits over 5 1/3 innings. The right-handed pitcher struck out five batters and walked one. Witherspoon has a 4.78 ERA, .256 BAA, and 1.39 WHIP in 17 starts. He has 78 strikeouts and 34 walks in 75 1/3 innings. Witherspoon was traded to the Orioles for Rutschman.
Marcus Phillips had a strange start this week. The right-handed pitcher allowed one run in four innings. He didn’t allow any hits, though. Instead, Phillips walked six batters and hit another. He struck out five. Phillips has a 6.54 ERA, .249 BAA, and 1.76 WHIP in 16 games (15 starts). He has 60 strikeouts and 45 walks in 52 1/3 innings.
Salem RidgeYaks (Single-A)
Sadbiel Delzine allowed one run on two hits over 4 1/3 innings on Friday. The right-handed pitcher struck out five batters and walked two. Delzine has only made two starts in Single-A, but he looks every bit the part of a top pitching prospect in the making.
Williams Montero had a rough first Single-A outing last week, allowing six runs over 1/3 of an inning. He was much better this time out. The right-handed pitcher gave up one hit over 3 1/3 scoreless innings. He struck out four batters without walking any.
Franklin Primera went 6-for-17 with a double and a home run this week. He walked more times (2) than he struck out (1). The right-handed-hitting catcher is slashing .299/.419/.455 with six doubles and two home runs. He’s driven in eight runs and scored 18 more. The 19-year-old has 10 walks and 12 strikeouts.
Adonys Guzman went 5-for-15 with a double and a home run this week. The right-handed-hitting catcher/first baseman drove in four runs and scored two. Guzman is slashing .258/.359/.455 with 12 doubles and nine home runs between Single-A and High-A. He’s driven in 30 runs and scored 31.
Skylar King went 6-for-19 with a double and a home run. He drove in four runs, scored two, and stole one base. The left-handed-hitting outfielder is slashing .244/.324/.406 with 15 doubles, one triple, and 11 home runs. He’s driven in 39 runs, scored 50, and stolen 28 bases.
