Boston Red Sox fans can't say minor league baseball boring. Just this week, we saw the promotion of top prospect Franklin Arias, a few other notable movers, a brawl that led to a suspension, dazzling debuts, a walk-off home run, and more.
We’re likely going to see shakeups throughout the system over the next few weeks due to the trade deadline.
Promotions and brawls headline this week’s Red Sox prospect watch
Worcester Red Sox (Triple-A)
Franklin Arias was finally promoted to Triple-A and made his debut on Saturday. The right-handed-hitting shortstop went 0-for-8 over his two games, but had some good swings and drove in a run.
Allan Castro went 6-for-18 with a double and a home run. The switch-hitting outfielder is slashing .244/.318/.368 with nine doubles, one triple, and nine home runs. He’s driven in 45 runs, scored 43, and stolen 17 bases.
Angel Bastardo had another phenomenal week. The right-handed pitcher allowed just one hit in 3 1/3 scoreless innings over two appearances out of the bullpen. He struck out six batters without walking any. Bastardo has a 4.62 ERA, .209 BAA, and 1.30 WHIP in 24 appearances. He has 51 strikeouts and 20 walks in 37 innings.
Blake Wehunt made his Triple-A debut this week. The right-handed pitcher allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits over 3 2/3 innings. He struck out four batters and walked two.
Portland Sea Dogs (Double-A)
John Holobetz gave up three hits over five shutout innings in his start. The right-handed pitcher didn’t walk anyone and struck out double-digit batters (10) for the second time this season. Holobetz has a 4.33 ERA, .236 BAA, and 1.22 WHIP in 17 games (15 starts) this season. He has 93 strikeouts and 25 walks in 79 innings. Holobetz was promoted to Triple-A on Sunday.
Hayden Mullins also tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit in his start. The left-handed pitcher walked one batter and struck out eight. Mullins has a 5.10 ERA, .206 BAA, and 1.37 WHIP in 16 games (14 starts) between Double-A and Triple-A this season. He has 85 strikeouts and 38 walks in 60 innings.
Max Carlson didn’t allow any runs or hits in 5 2/3 innings over two appearances out of the bullpen en route to picking up a save. He walked one batter and struck out seven. The right-handed pitcher has a 5.03 ERA, .268 BAA, and 1.25 WHIP in 26 games (one start). He has 65 strikeouts and 13 walks in 59 innings.
Reidis Sena gave up one hit over 2 2/3 scoreless innings in his lone bullpen appearance. He struck out six batters and walked one. The right-handed pitcher has a 3.55 ERA, .220 BAA, and 1.45 WHIP in 20 appearances in Double-A. He has 48 strikeouts and 20 walks in 33 innings.
Greenville Drive (High-A)
Justin Gonzales had maybe the most eventful week one could have. The right-handed-hitting outfielder/first baseman went 5-for-12 with two walks, a double, an HBP, and two steals. He also hit two home runs. The first homer led to a brawl that saw Gonzales slap the catcher and get ejected and suspended for one game. In his return game, Gonzales hit his second home run of the week, which was a walk-off home run. The 19-year-old is slashing .263/.379/.451 with nine doubles, two triples, and 14 home runs. He’s driven in 42 runs, scored 54, and stolen seven bases.
Enddy Azocar went 7-for-21 with two doubles, a triple, and two home runs this week. The right-handed-hitting outfielder is slashing .266/.324/.503 with 24 doubles, six triples, and 15 home runs between Single-A and High-A. He’s driven in 53 runs, scored 66, and stolen 11.
Antonio Anderson snapped an eight-game hitting streak on Sunday. The switch-hitting corner infielder went 7-for-20 with a double and a triple this week. Anderson is slashing .270/.364/.444 with nine doubles, three triples, and six home runs. He’s driven in 30 runs, scored 32, and stolen one base.
Devin Futrell allowed one run on five hits over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out nine batters and walked one. The left-handed pitcher has a 4.06 ERA, .235 BAA, and 1.07 WHIP in 16 games (12 starts) between Single-A and High-A. He has 87 strikeouts and 13 walks in 77 2/3 innings.
Dylan Brown allowed two runs on four hits over six innings. He struck out seven batters without walking any. The left-handed pitcher has a 3.59 ERA, .242 BAA, and 1.33 WHIP in 16 games (15 starts) between Single-A and High-A. He has 104 strikeouts and 33 walks in 77 2/3 innings.
Salem RidgeYaks (Single-A)
Sadbiel Delzine made his much-anticipated Single-A debut and did not disappoint. The 18-year-old allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits over four innings. He struck out six batters and walked two. The control was a bit iffy at times, but Delzine looks absolutely filthy. He loves to mix up his timing and mess with the batters, which is fun, and he has a gross breaking stuff.
Kleyver Salazar went 8-for-13 with two doubles, two home runs, seven RBI, and more walks (5) than strikeouts (3). The right-handed-hitting catcher/first baseman is slashing .280/.388/.457 with 16 doubles and nine home runs. He’s driven in 46 runs, scored 39, and stolen five bases. Salazar has 43 walks and 48 strikeouts.
Andrews Opata went 9-for-21 with a double, a home run, seven RBI, and two steals. The right-handed-hitting outfielder is slashing .254/.361/.377 with 10 doubles, two triples, and seven home runs. He’s driven in 37 runs, scored 55, and stolen a modern-day Salem record 41 bases.Â
Franklin Primera went 6-for-14 with two doubles, four RBI, and two walks compared to just one strikeout. The right-handed-hitting catcher is slashing .283/.403/.417 with five doubles and one home run since being promoted to Single-A. He has six RBI and 14 runs scored in 16 games with Salem. Primera has 11 strikeouts compared to eight walks.
