When the Boston Red Sox selected Anthony Eyanson with the 87th overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, the book on him seemed to be a pitcher with great secondaries to compensate for a just-solid fastball.
That was mainly due to the right-handed pitcher’s fastball hovering in the low-90s at the time. Fast-forward to the Spring Breakout game, and Eyanson was hitting triple digits. Suddenly, the 21-year-old had a potential plus fastball to go along with multiple plus secondaries.
That was just spring training, though. Wouldn’t Eyanson need to prove himself in the regular season, as well? Here’s the good news …
Eyanson made his minor league debut in High-A on April 4. The righty allowed one run on three hits over three innings. He struck out six batters and didn’t walk any.
Red Sox prospect Anthony Eyanson putting up historic numbers to start minor league career
That’s a fantastic start to his career, but it was only the beginning. On Saturday, Eyanson made his second career start for the Greenville Drive. He tossed 4 1/3 perfect innings. Eyanson struck out seven batters and didn’t allow a single batted ball to even make it to the outfield.
You read that right. That’s an absurd stat, especially for anyone's second professional start ever.
Through 7 1/3 innings to start his career, Eyanson has a 1.23 ERA, .120 BAA, and 0.41 WHIP in High-A. He has 13 strikeouts compared to zero walks.
Eyanson isn’t walking people (literally), is striking them out at a nearly 18 K/9 clip, and has shown a deadly arsenal of pitches.
The Red Sox farm system may be more loaded with pitchers than ever before. In Greenville alone, they boast Juan Valera, Kyson Witherspoon (15th overall pick in the 2025 draft), Marcus Phillips (33rd overall pick in the 2025 draft), and Eyanson.
Due to that, it’s harder than ever for a pitcher to shine brighter than the rest. You’d imagine Eyanson would be the least likely of the Greenville four, considering he was the latest draft pick (and Valera was a top 100 prospect at one point last season).
Eyanson is threatening to become the breakout star prospect, though. A start to his career that would make prime Pedro Martinez blush is making that abundantly clear.
