Boston Red Sox fans have watched in envy as the Philadelphia Phillies have thrived since firing the manager they began the 2026 season with, Rob Thomson. But not everything has turned to gold for Philly, as its outfield group is in a bad way.

The Phillies announced on June 18 that right fielder Adolis Garcia will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn lat. Garcia sustained the injury on June 10 while trying to throw George Springer out at the plate. Red Sox fans unfortunately know from experience how brutal lat injuries can be, and Garrett Crochet's isn't even torn.

Garcia struggled before his injury, though. He batted just .195/.270/.329 with 84 strikeouts over 67 games. Philadelphia's other outfielders have struggled severely, as well — rookie Justin Crawford is batting .238/.292/.329 and Derek Hill is slashing .217/.280/.359. If the Phillies want their best chance in the second half of the season, they'll need to add an outfielder ahead of the trade deadline.

Luckily for them, the Red Sox are out of the running and have outfielders to spare. A report from Jim Bowden of The Athletic linked longtime Boston trade candidate Jarren Duran to Philadelphia and the San Diego Padres this season (subscription required). The Padres have coveted Duran for years but the Phillies could be just as good a fit.

Red Sox and Phillies line up even better for potential Jarren Duran trade after Adolis Garcia season-ending surgery

Duran has struggled at the plate this season compared to years past, with a .210/.269/.390 slash line through 67 games. He's been hitting for power more consistently since May and 11 of his 12 home runs have come since May 1.

Duran could give Philly a real boost on the defensive front. After a regression in the field last year, the outfielder is back to playing top-tier defense with five outs above average and 93rd percentile range in left field. Garcia played elite defense while he was healthy so Duran could step into that role. Hill, Crawford and Brandon Marsh all play about league-average defense or below. Duran would be an improvement over any of them in the field.

Unlike the Red Sox, the Phillies are a club of veterans expected to be in the playoff race. There, the spotlight wouldn't be on Duran to be the leadoff hitter or a main source of production for the team and he could play without the added pressure that comes with being in Boston. For that reason, a change of scenery might serve him well.

The Red Sox are past the point of getting the best possible return for Duran, but he has two more years on his contract, so he's more than just a rental. If the Phillies want a longer-term solution to some of their outfield woes, Duran could be a solid answer.
