The Boston Red Sox are in the throes of a 16-game stretch with no off days while recovering from a 13-inning thriller against the Chicago White Sox. Seth Martinez is the latest roster casualty to keep the bullpen fresh.
Boston on August 12 designated Martinez for assignment and called up Alec Gamboa. These are the latest of many bullpen moves, including Greg Weissert's option to Triple-A Worcester.
Martinez signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox over the offseason and pitched in Worcester until his August 9 call up. The 31-year-old posted a 5.55 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 49 strikeouts and 17 walks over 60 innings, including nine stars. He made just one, one-inning appearance for the Sox, during which he allowed a run on two hits with a strikeout and a hit batsman.

Gamboa's August 12 call-up is his sixth of the season. He's clocked a 2.08 ERA (three runs on 10 hits), 1.15 WHIP, 12 strikeouts and five walks over 13 innings.
NESN reportedly signs Red Sox play-by-play voice Dave O'Brien to two-year contract
On August 9, Sean McAdam of MassLive reported that Red Sox play-by-play announcer Dave O'Brien has signed a two-year contract to remain with NESN (subscription required). The deal has not been formally announced.
O'Brien's previous contract was set to expire after the 2026 campaign and he's now been renewed through 2028, though with a smaller workload. O'Brien wishes to spend more time with his family after a decade in the NESN booth and he'll do so by giving more games to guest announcers, such as Mike Monaco. McAdam reports that he could've signed a longer deal, but chose not to.
Like the Red Sox from June to now, O'Brien has been on quite a run in the booth. Boston has given him plenty of electric moments to call and he's met the moment on the mic. NESN has even introduced a new camera in the broadcast booth to capture O'Brien and color analyst Lou Merloni's real-time reactions to plays, which fans have loved. It's taken some time for fans to come around to O'Brien's style of broadcasting, but his performance during Boston's heater is turning heads.
Red Sox maintain good standing in American League East, Wild Card following four-straight losses
The Red Sox have recently come down quite hard from their historic winning spell in July and early August after losing four straight games to the Athletics and Toronto Blue Jays. But their 30-5 stretch will help them maintain their third place standing in the American League East for a bit longer.
Before games on August 12, the Red Sox have a seven-game lead on the Jays and Baltimore Orioles, who are tied for last place in the division. The Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees still have leads of nine and three games, respectively, residual from their statuses as two of the best teams in the AL early this season.
The Red Sox will have the chance to make up some of their recent losses in their coming series. They'll visit the slumping Pittsburgh Pirates, then the tough Arizona Diamondbacks will visit Fenway Park, followed by the San Francisco Giants, one of the worst teams in the league this season.
