The Boston Red Sox haven't had a consistent second baseman since Dustin Pedroia's final season in 2019.

Boston has plenty of internal options it could play at second base in 2025, but most of them aren't second basemen by trade, or they have relatively little to no experience in the major leagues. Because of their pool of talent at second base, many reporters and insiders have predicted the Red Sox will hit the free agent market to find a veteran middle infielder.

Fox Sports' Rowan Kavner has suggested the Sox, among a few other clubs, should sign former Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres. He posted a rough final year in New York and could be looking for a change of scenery.

Torres posted a .257/.330/.378 slash line with a .708 OPS with 26 doubles, 15 homers and 63 RBI in 154 games last season. The 27-year-old is a career .265/.334/.441 hitter, and the slight downturn in his offensive numbers isn't the best way for Torres to hit the free agent market.

But the second baseman posted great stats in September and October. Torres finished the regular season batting .315/.371/.454 in his last 30 games and he batted .241/.348/.397 with three doubles, two homers and eight RBI in the postseason to give the Yankees' offense some life.

Torres isn't a great defender, but Boston's middle infield should take any improvement it can get after the Red Sox clocked 115 errors last season. He posted negative four outs above average in his last two campaigns and ranked in the 14th percentile among defenders in 2024.

Torres is right-handed and the Sox were desperate for production from their righty bats last season. Their lineup is overwhelmed by lefties, which caused the Red Sox to be particularly weak against lefty pitching. The addition of a righty veteran like Torres could help mitigate that, but a few of Boston's internal second base options — Vaughn Grissom, Kristian Campbell, Romy González, Trevor Story, Ceddanne Rafaela — are also righties.

The Red Sox's front office hasn't made many significant free agent signings in recent seasons, and adding Torres would be an unexpected deviation from their previous precedents. If Boston were to turn to the free agent market to add a middle infielder, Torres may be among the most talented, and therefore the most coveted, options available.
