On April 17 at Fenway Park, Ranger Suárez put the Boston Red Sox on his back. The lefty gave his second consecutive excellent outing which was also the longest of the year for any Red Sox starter — he went eight, scoreless, two-hit innings with four strikeouts and a walk.
Casey Mize also carried the Detroit Tigers with a stellar showing. He gave up three hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over 6.2 innings.
But no matter how well Mize pitched or how well the Tigers played around him, the prophecy was fulfilled as soon as the Red Sox got dressed this afternoon. They were wearing Fenway green.
Both teams' relievers continued the clean slate through nine innings and into extras. With runners on the corners and one out in the 10th inning, Alex Cora lifted Caleb Durbin from the on-deck circle to play Masataka Yoshida against Tigers righty Will Vest.
Yoshida did what he does best and bounced a ground ball through the right field gap. The single gave the speedy Jarren Duran plenty of time to score from third base to lift the Red Sox out of a 0-0 deadlock.
The April 17 win was Boston's seventh in its Green Monster-inspired jerseys. Every single one has been a walk-off. The one before Yoshida's also came against the Tigers, when Ceddanne Rafaela lifted a triple to center field on September 26 to send the Red Sox to the postseason for the first time since 2021.

Despite Yoshida's success at the plate so far this season — he's slashing .310/.474/.414 — he's only appeared in 12 games due to Boston's severe outfield logjam. Before Friday night's game, the Red Sox were 1-10 in games which Yoshida played. In the Sox's lucky uniforms, he kicked the trend.
Cora started Duran in the outfield against the Tigers and kept Yoshida on the bench until the right moment, but maybe the Red Sox could've won in nine innings if he had an earlier chance to hit. The Fenway uniforms demand a walk-off, however.
Before the heroics in the 10th inning, the Red Sox played well behind Suárez. Boston managed a clean slate on defense despite Suárez's high ground-ball rate and they kept the Tigers from doing damage.
Connor Wong had a standout night behind the plate and caught two Detroit runners stealing. Both plays were nail-biters that went to replay review, but Wong was on his game and Marcelo Mayer made perfect tags. Alongside his best defensive showing of the season, Wong had one of the Sox's four hits and a walk.
In the next two games of their series against the Tigers, Boston will don its yellow and blue Marathon City Connect jerseys, which it's historically been successful in. The Red Sox have shown they need momentum and good vibes to win. Boston's win over the Tigers is their second in a row and it hasn't won more than two consecutive games so far this season. A walk-off could bring just the energy the Red Sox need to get off on a winning streak before the New York Yankees come to town at the end of the week.
