During their September 9 game against the A's, the Boston Red Sox had an injury scare they can't afford at this stage of the season.
Romy Gonzalez was pulled in the bottom of the second inning, after he'd already walked out onto the field to take up his position at first base. Gonzalez limped off the field alongside a trainer, and it was later reported that he had knee soreness.
Romy Gonzalez categorized as day-to-day after leaving Sept. 9 game with knee soreness
Fortunately for the Red Sox, Gonzalez, their hottest hitter at the moment, thinks he'll be fine. The infielder shared after the game that his knee locked up on him during the game and he felt much better afterward. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Gonzalez will be day-to-day, avoiding the injured list.
Gonzalez has kept Boston's offense alive after it lost Roman Anthony to an oblique strain on September 2. He's on a 12-game hitting streak, the longest active streak in MLB, and he's batting .392/.407/.471 with nine RBI in his last 15 games.
MRI shows no damage in Dustin May's elbow, Red Sox place him on 15-day IL
The Red Sox on September 9 revealed yet another injury in their starting rotation when they placed Dustin May on the 15-day IL with elbow neuritis. May told reporters that the pain in his forearm began on September 6.
The righty underwent an MRI which showed no structural damage in his elbow (subscription required). Elbow injuries are often an indicator of a more serious ailment that could require a UCL reconstruction, but May and the Red Sox will escape such a disaster.
Boston acquired May at the trade deadline, and he hasn't been the addition to the pitching staff it hoped for (5.40 ERA in 28.1 innings over six appearances). Still, pitching depth is critical as the postseason looms, and the Sox's rotation is already thoroughly depleted with Tanner Houck, Hunter Dobbins, Richard Fitts and Kutter Crawford on the IL.
60-day IL placement ends Vaughn Grissom's season with the WooSox
Red Sox minor league infielder Vaughn Grissom hasn't appeared in a game since August 9 due to an injury in his foot. Boston on September 9 recalled him to the major league roster, only to place him on the 60-day IL with plantar fasciitis.
Grissom was the Red Sox's return in the one-for-one Chris Sale trade with the Braves, and he's only posted 31 games in the big leagues since his arrival. Injuries and offensive struggles kept him in the minor leagues for much of last season, and he hasn't appeared in the big leagues in 2025, likely due to Boston's middle infield surplus.
Grissom has posted a solid season in Triple-A this year, with a .270/.342/.441 with a .783 OPS over 96 games. His rebound could make him a solid trade candidate this offseason, despite the injury that ended his season prematurely.
